The flow continues through each generation
It has been 50 years since the country was unified, the sound of guns has been silent, but the theme of revolutionary war is still like a strong stream, inviting generations of writers to constantly create and produce valuable literary works. Especially recently, besides the main genres, literature about revolutionary war has been supplemented by a series of memoirs and autobiographies from many authors, including generals or soldiers returning from wars. These include Living and Telling (Tran Luan Tin), O R - Stories after 50 Years (Le Van Thao), Soldier Memories (Vu Cong Chien), That War Season (Doan Tuan), Dat K (Bui Quang Lam), Stories of Southwest Soldiers (Trung Sy), The Dryad Forest in the Season of Changing Leaves (Nguyen Vu Dien), Echoes of Khau Chia Hill (Nguyen Thai Long)...
Among these, many works have been honored with prestigious awards and prizes. Along with that, many literary works and memoirs about the revolutionary war published by Tre Publishing House such as Van bai lat ngua (Nguyen Truong Thien Ly), Minh va ho (Nguyen Binh Phuong), But lich linh tang - Hanh chu den Dinh Doc lap (Nguyen Khac Nguyet), Nhung phan siem may (Nguyen Van Tau) ... have been reprinted many times. This shows the weight of non-fiction works, written by the people involved; at the same time, it also shows that reading and learning about national history is an indispensable need.
Before the "Armed Forces and Revolutionary War" Literary Writing Camp of the People's Army Publishing House, the Army Literature Magazine just finished the "Literature on Revolutionary War and Soldiers" Writing Camp in Da Lat ( Lam Dong ) in June this year. The camp had 15 authors from provinces and cities across the country; most of the campers were young people of the 8X and 9X generations. At the end of the writing camp, the organizing committee received 15 short stories, 15 poetry collections and 15 critical theory articles.
According to writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, Editor-in-Chief of the Army Literature Magazine and Vice President of the Vietnam Writers Association, many young people have not experienced war but they still write with the tendency to explore people in the context of war. “That means literature about revolutionary war does not stop at recording reality or presenting the author’s direct experiences but has become a universal topic for writers to create, find ways to dissect, analyze, and explore people through that context. Therefore, revolutionary war and soldiers are always important topics for Vietnamese literature,” writer Nguyen Binh Phuong expressed.
“Writers create works based on their own internal needs, but the main issue that needs attention is the promotion stage. Because in reality, works on the topic of revolutionary war have a more disadvantaged perspective and approach than other topics. Meanwhile, their educational and preservation value is very large,” said writer Nguyen Binh Phuong, Editor-in-Chief of the Army Literature Magazine and Vice President of the Vietnam Writers Association.
Young writers are confident and bold.
The continuity of the literature on revolutionary war also comes from the participation of young writers. In addition to the famous writers of the previous generation, there is now the enthusiastic participation of young writers such as Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa, Le Vu Truong Giang, Cao Nguyet Nguyen, Huynh Trong Khang, Le Khai Viet, etc. Thanks to that, literature on revolutionary war is constantly supplemented, creating richness and diversity in content and writing style.

Belonging to the 9X generation, young writer Le Quang Trang is a prominent writer in the West today. Along with his writings vividly reflecting the people and the land of the Southwest river, he also left his mark on the theme of revolutionary war. With the short story collection Smoke of the Border written about the Southwest border war, Le Quang Trang has just received the B prize for composing and promoting literary, artistic and journalistic works of the Ministry of National Defense on the theme of armed forces and revolutionary war in the period 2020 - 2025.
“As a young person, not having experienced war and enjoying the fruits of peace, when looking back at the past, I am always curious and ask myself many questions. The more I dig deeper, the more I find answers for myself and realize that behind those answers is boundless gratitude for the sacrifices of our ancestors. It is from curiosity, the desire to learn and find my own way to explain that I wrote about the revolutionary war,” writer Le Quang Trang shared.
In fact, there are many young authors who want to write about revolutionary war, however, the barrier of real-life experience makes them hesitant. Writer Nguyen Binh Phuong believes that when it comes to literature and creativity, it is not necessary to achieve the accuracy of the documents, but the most important thing is the writer's perception. If the next generation is required to have accuracy in documents, it will become a memoir, not a literary creation.
From there, writer Nguyen Binh Phuong said: “In my opinion, young people should confidently hold a pen, but don’t change anything that is essential. For example, you are not allowed to distort the justice of our nation’s wars to defend our country. As for the context and details, they are the land for writers to create. After all, war is also a context for people to express themselves. Young people should boldly and confidently write, without being concerned about whether the story is real or not, accurate or not.”
