An Giang Newspaper fulfills its mission as the "history recorder" of the province
Half a century accompanying the province
Along with the “hundred-year joy” of revolutionary journalism, An Giang Newspaper also had its own joy, when it reached the 50th anniversary of its establishment. After the country was completely liberated, on May 20, 1975, the News - Press Department of the Long Chau Ha Propaganda Department launched the first news with the mantle “Tin Tuc Long Chau Ha”, including 2 pages of A4 paper size. On August 19, 1975, the “Long Chau Ha” news officially became a weekly newspaper. This was the transitional issue from the war to peace period. The Editorial Board and reporters at this time were comrades working in journalism from the war zone, combined with students who loved the profession on the spot, and had not attended any professional training. Faced with that reality, Mr. Tran Thu Dong (Editor-in-Chief from 1975 to 1981) opened a journalism class, instructing some basic knowledge on how to write news and articles.
In 1976, the newspaper “Long Chau Ha” changed its name to An Giang Newspaper, with Mr. Tran Thu Dong as Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Ngo Thanh Phong as Deputy Editor-in-Chief, along with members of the Editorial Board: Nguyen Thi Linh Phuong, Le Ngoc Bich; photojournalists: Van Ngan, Tran Binh, Thanh Huy; writers: Thanh Luy, Huu Son, Nam Thang. Despite having few people, very rudimentary professional equipment, and operating in a very large area, An Giang Newspaper successfully fulfilled its role of information, propaganda, reflection, and orientation of public opinion in the war to protect the southwestern border of the Fatherland; renovating fields, rapidly increasing food production to overcome hunger, fulfilling the duty of the frontline and the whole country, gradually rebuilding the homeland.
In the renovation period of 1986 - 1990, An Giang Newspaper started with a new spirit, reflecting many aspects, widely distributed to the people from 5,000 copies/issue/week to 10,000 copies/issue, with 2 issues/week; from 4 black and white pages to 8 pages, printed in 2 colors. Since then, An Giang Newspaper has truly matured and developed comprehensively. 17 cadres and reporters (in the early years of establishment) increased to 48 people, of which more than 50% are party members. From limited political and professional qualifications, now there are many comrades with bachelor's degrees in politics, the majority of reporters have 1 - 2 university degrees. An Giang Newspaper currently has nearly 200 collaborators working inside and outside the province regularly collaborating, including famous writers, poets, journalists, and scientists in the country. This force has accompanied each stage of the newspaper's development. The number of circulations also increased with each stage of development, from 2,000 copies/issue to 5,000 copies, 8,000 copies, then 10,000 copies/issue and nearly 11,000 copies/issue; it is one of the 10 Party newspapers in the country with the highest circulation. That is not to mention the annual special issues, such as: April 30 Newspaper, Spring Newspaper, commemorating President Ton Duc Thang's birthday... with beautiful form, rich content, and large circulation.
Along with the printed newspaper, An Giang e-newspaper was launched on May 19, 2008, marking a new development step of the Party newspaper in the era of digital information explosion. The average number of visits is 1 million/month. In each stage of development, An Giang Newspaper is always consistent with the motto "Fast, truthful information, for the common benefit of the community". An Giang e-newspaper quickly rose to the leading position of the Party newspaper in the Mekong Delta region, continuously appearing in the top 10 of the Party e-newspapers nationwide. This result was achieved thanks to the amount of information on An Giang e-newspaper being updated continuously and multi-dimensionally, covering all fields.
In addition to changing in form, An Giang Newspaper has also changed dramatically in content, the clearest proof is the increasing number of press awards. In 2018, for the first time, the unit had a work that won the National Press Award - the most prestigious award for Vietnamese journalists. Like the opening "fireworks", for many consecutive years after that, almost all regional and national press awards named the works and authors of An Giang Newspaper. In the period of 2020 - 2025, the unit had more than 80 cadres and reporters winning press awards. This is a very proud achievement, not every press agency can achieve it, especially local Party newspapers.
“After 50 years of establishment and development, the staff, reporters and employees of An Giang Newspaper have been professionalizing, fulfilling the task of information and propaganda; providing current events and current affairs and being a broad democratic forum for the people. Besides the advantages of information technology, technical infrastructure, and professional skills, An Giang Newspaper and the journalism team nationwide are facing a number of difficulties and obstacles, such as: The trend of reading printed newspapers has seriously declined; fierce competition between mainstream newspapers and social networks; increasing reader demand; changes in the apparatus and working methods due to the process of merging press agencies according to the arrangement of provincial administrative units... Reality requires each staff, reporter and employee in the editorial office to quickly catch up and transform with the new stage; be more versatile, and transform digitally more strongly. Only then can we maintain and promote the tradition of An Giang Newspaper over the past half century” - Editor-in-Chief of An Giang Newspaper Tran Thi Bich Van expressed.

Grown up from journalism
The province currently has 4 press agency associations, with 153 members who are cadres, reporters, editors, and journalists. The hardships and difficulties of the profession make our steps more steady. Because we do not only do journalism to live, but also live to do journalism. The joy of completing a journalistic work every day, of seeing our “brainchild” spread far and wide… is a great motivation for the years of dedication to continue. The successive business trips, the busy hours of work, and the authentic experiences from the grassroots have become familiar to journalists. Every time we “go a day on the road”, we feel like we “learn a lot of wisdom”, become more mature, more knowledgeable, and stronger!
Having been in the profession for the past 23 years, journalist Dang Nguyen Hanh Chau (Party Building - Internal Affairs Department, An Giang Newspaper) has affirmed her personal "brand", contributing to the overall achievements of the unit, when winning 24 provincial and national press awards, notably the C prize of the 3rd Golden Hammer and Sickle Award in 2018, the Encouragement prize of the 14th National Press Award in 2019, the C prize of the Press Award in the writing contest "Protecting the Party's ideological foundation in the new situation" for the first time (2021 - 2022)... Ms. Chau proudly said: "If I had to choose again, I would still choose journalism. After many years of being passionate about the profession, I have become passionate about the profession, the profession has seeped into my blood. The happiest thing about journalism for me is being able to go, to listen, to see, to experience and to contemplate. From the vivid realities of life, from specific lives, it has given me the opportunity to understand more about myself, to understand more about life, helping me to know how to listen, to communicate Download the article's emotions to bring the breath of life to readers. Although the profession is not without difficulties, hardships, and hardships, it always brings me a lot of life's poetry. In the spirit of dedication, modern journalism, I realize that I have to learn more to use multimedia journalism integration technology; continue to promote the vanguard spirit of soldiers on the ideological and cultural front, and contribute to journalism to have many good works to serve readers.
Journalist Pham Thi Thu Oanh (Electronic Newspaper Department, Kien Giang Newspaper) is from Vinh Long, but she became involved in journalism when she passed the entrance exam to Kien Giang Newspaper in August 2011. From the confusion of her first days in journalism, she has continuously learned from her colleagues, improved her knowledge through books and newspapers, and participated in training and development courses to improve her knowledge and journalism skills to apply in her work. The enthusiastic guidance and guidance of the Editorial Board and the department's leaders have helped her gradually mature in her career, try harder to create better journalism products to serve readers, and contribute to improving the quality of the newspaper. In charge of the defense - security sector, the propaganda sector, and having been in charge of remote areas, areas with Khmer ethnic minorities, she has had the opportunity to travel, approach, and understand more about the lives and work of soldiers and people in border areas. It is the understanding, sympathy, sharing and affection for Uncle Ho's soldiers, the simple, lovable and gentle people that inspired her to write articles that truly and vividly reflect the soldiers and the people. Those works have contributed to reflecting the results of implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws at the grassroots level, vividly and truthfully reflecting the thoughts and feelings of the people and soldiers.
An Giang Spring Newspaper about the countryside
In a few days, journalist Thu Oanh will become a member of the An Giang press “family”. According to her, the merger of Kien Giang and An Giang provinces is not only a major milestone in the development of the Mekong Delta region, but also opens up new opportunities and challenges for journalists in their work. “The intersection between two lands rich in cultural identity, tradition and rich people's lives creates a "golden land" for the press to exploit humane stories, reflecting changes and community cohesion. I think this is an opportunity for the press to contribute to shaping a common identity, spreading the spirit of solidarity, promoting socio-economic development of the merged region. However, there are also many challenges for journalists, from getting acquainted with a larger area, to grasping the diversity in people's lives, culture, customs, local languages... This requires journalists to be more flexible, in-depth, sensitive and responsible than ever, so that each work is not only correct and accurate, but also imbued with humanity, contributing to the common journey of a land that is growing day by day" - she expressed.
Revolutionary journalism has a long history of hundreds of years. Proud of the achievements of our predecessors, today's generation of journalists carries with them "sharp pen, loyal heart, bright mind", firmly continuing to write a new page of history for the country, homeland and for their own noble profession.
“On June 4, during a working session with the leaders of An Giang - Kien Giang provinces, General Secretary To Lam suggested: After the merger, the new province must quickly stabilize its organization, while focusing highly on the task of socio-economic development with a proactive, creative, decisive and flexible spirit. Pay attention to investing heavily in education - training, grassroots health care, cultural development and preserving traditional values, associated with arousing the belief, pride and aspiration to contribute of each citizen in the new province. Hopefully, in addition to the efforts of the Party Committee and the government in the process of arranging the apparatus and organizing the local government at 2 levels, there will continue to be many more literary, artistic and journalistic works contributing to spreading the noble values of morality and style of Uncle Ho and Uncle Ton, "arousing the belief, pride and aspiration to contribute of each citizen" as directed by the General Secretary" - Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department, Head of the Delegation of the Provincial Party Committee National Assembly Representative of An Giang Province Tran Thi Thanh Huong sent a message to the press team. |
