Grown up from journalism

- A career is what people need to survive. Some people choose a career, thrive on their work, and go to work every day with a burning passion. Some people find their career as a “karma”, struggling, struggling, bitter, and full of tears. Journalism is no exception to this general rule. Along with the joys and happiness of the profession, the failures, bitterness, and emotions of other lives and circumstances are all lessons for us young reporters to grow up.

Every mistake is a lesson

Our Tuyen Quang Online Newspaper Fanpage has nearly 39 thousand likes and over 112 thousand followers. This achievement is first of all due to the direct attention and direction of the Tuyen Quang Newspaper Editorial Board, then the silent efforts over the past 5 years of generations of Admins. At one time, followers of Tuyen Quang Online Newspaper were curious to know who the Admin was who had such shocking "status". The readers' attention to the page is a small joy for those of us in the profession when every day the news articles posted receive hundreds, even thousands of interactions. But, that is not all. We have been slow - wrong many times and the consequences have been "tears".

In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025, when everyone was busy with year-end work, cleaning, shopping, and preparing for a complete Tet for their family, our Admin group continued to maintain the Fanpage. That day, according to the Government Information Fanpage, I posted the information: "Focus resources, actively provide emergency care, and urgently consult the entire Bach Mai Hospital to come up with the best treatment plan for 32 children suspected of rat poison poisoning". Immediately, the news attracted hundreds of interactions. But just ten minutes later, I was asked to remove the news.

The Government Information Page is not wrong, the information is not wrong but it is old information. Re-publishing the news at that time is also insensitive because the students are of great concern to the province, many of them have stabilized and were taken to the Provincial General Hospital for further monitoring. Only 3 days later, all of the students were stabilized and were discharged from the hospital to go home with their families to celebrate Tet.

A situation of my professional insensitivity affected both the Editorial Board and the department leader. I deeply regretted affecting the whole team. “One mistake can lead to a huge loss”, journalism is sometimes full of danger.

The essential requirements of a journalist

Although I had heard people say that "Anyone who has been through Mr. Cong's hands must cry at least once", during the years from the Politics - Society - Readers Department to the Economics Department, perhaps because he sympathized with my fragile sensitivity, he never once spoke harshly. Later, the departments were streamlined, and Mr. Trinh Thanh Cong was the Head of our Reporter Department. At that time, it was very sad when he had to face the terrible cancer. I know that he is a serious person. And although he was very tired from fighting the disease and having to undergo long-term chemotherapy, he still worked his best when he still could.

Every trip is a new experience for reporters.

At the end of June 2024, I was assigned to follow the delegation of the Organizing Committee of the provincial youth and children's creativity contest to inspect the implementation of the contest in the districts. On the first day, I followed the inspection delegation to Lam Binh and Chiem Hoa districts. The next day, the delegation went to inspect Na Hang and Yen Son districts, but because it coincided with another event, I only followed the inspection delegation to Yen Son without reporting back to the department leaders. At that time, Mr. Trinh Thanh Cong - our department head was very angry and called to scold me. Until now, I can't remember the specific words, but it can be summarized as "if you can't do your job seriously, then quit your job". In 7 years of working as a journalist, that was probably the time I cried the most, both because I felt sorry for a brother who was struggling with illness and because I was angry at how he could say such cruel words.

Now that he has left this world, we cannot be angry with him again even if we wanted to. “Come here to write a good news story”, “Listen to the breath of life”, “Don’t be sad or I will scold you again”… Young reporters like me have gradually matured because of the meticulous editing of sentences, because of the reminders to take our job seriously, because of the love for the job passed on by a brother, a teacher, a respected colleague.

Grown from the profession

Over time, we grew up in journalism.

I am not a natural talent for journalism, because in the past, I was quiet and introverted. Journalism requires me to improve my communication skills, to be more confident, more sociable, more skillful... As I get older, young journalists like me gradually improve myself to meet the demands of the profession.

When Tuyen Quang Newspaper caught up with the digital transformation, every reporter had to learn how to create multimedia works: E-magazine, Infographic, Video on digital platforms... At first, everything was difficult. Learning was never easy. Complaining that other newspapers all had professional video makers and professional designers, we still kept learning and practicing creating new types of journalism.

Perhaps knowledge is the most beautiful jewelry for each person. It is also what makes young reporters like us more confident. The achievements of Tuyen Quang Newspaper today with its enhanced reputation and position are the answer to the right decisions of the Editorial Board. Thanks to those decisions, the bumpy and difficult roads we have gone through have helped us grow up and mature with the journalism profession.

We young reporters learn many things from each trip. It is the brutal war with the tragic but also very proud stories of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, the examples of overcoming fate to rise up and take control of life, immersing ourselves in every slice and breath of life to bring the most authentic information to readers... We are diligent farmers sowing in the field of knowledge. 100 years of Vietnamese Revolutionary Journalism is also a time for us young generation to slow down, look back to the previous generation to constantly learn, cultivate, and improve ourselves, to best meet the requirements of our profession.

We, young journalists, aspire to accompany every event, every historical step of the nation, with each written page awaited by many classes of people. “Bright eyes, pure heart, sharp pen” is the guiding principle for young journalists to constantly strive, learn and mature in the profession.
