Many new rice varieties are grown according to the organic model in the fields of Quang Dien commune. |
Changing production thinking
In the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop, Mr. Pham Hai's family, residing in Dong Vinh village, Dan Dien commune, put 3.5 sao of rice into organic production. Unlike the traditional method which depends heavily on chemical pesticides, Mr. Hai uses microbial fertilizers and biological pesticides. "Although organic rice farming is more difficult, the rice grains are clean, safe, favored by the market and sold at a higher price," Mr. Hai shared.
Not only Mr. Hai, more and more households in Dan Dien and Quang Dien have changed their mindset in rice cultivation. From only focusing on productivity, many farmers now focus on the quality and added value of rice grains. In Dan Dien commune, many rice areas focus on organic farming, VietGAP has been formed in agricultural cooperatives: Nam Vinh, Dong Vinh, Phu Thuan, contributing to bringing the annual agricultural production value to about 650 billion VND.
Currently, Quang Dien and Dan Dien communes have about 16 hectares of organic rice, 17 hectares of rice using biofertilizers and 20 hectares of production according to VietGAP standards. Although the number is not large, it is an important foundation for expansion in the coming years. In these two localities, 32 large-scale fields with a total area of 845.5 hectares have also been planned, creating conditions for the synchronous application of advanced farming processes, production of high-quality, organic and VietGAP rice varieties according to a closed value chain.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Dan Dien Commune, informed: The locality is focusing on developing key agricultural products according to safe and sustainable standards, especially VietGAP and organic. The expansion of organic rice acreage not only serves local and city needs but also aims for export.
Local authorities and rice farmers in Dan Dien and Quang Dien are currently cooperating with the Plant and Livestock Seed Joint Stock Company, Que Lam Group, etc. in supplying seeds, organic fertilizers and consuming products. This connection creates a “three-party value chain”, helping farmers feel secure in production, businesses have a stable source of raw materials and the locality has more resources for sustainable development.
Towards sustainable agriculture
Mr. Hoang Van Minh Chau, Vice Chairman of Quang Dien Commune People's Committee informed: The results of the trial planting of 0.5 ha of TBR 97 rice variety supplied by Thai Binh Seed Group showed positive results. The rice variety grows well, has strong plants, few pests and diseases, has a high percentage of solid grains, and a yield of 68 - 70 quintals/ha, surpassing traditional varieties. This is a positive signal for choosing varieties suitable for organic production in the commune.
In fact, organic rice brings many benefits: Farmers reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, consumers have clean, safe rice; the field environment is protected, the ecosystem is more balanced; economic value is often 1.5 - 2 times higher than regular rice, many organic rice products have built brands, and stable output. However, organic rice production still faces many challenges. In which, the majority mainly comes from traditional farming habits that make some farmers not bold enough to switch; the cost of organic fertilizers and biological pesticides is higher; production techniques require meticulousness and perseverance; the consumer market still depends heavily on contracts. If there is a lack of connection between production - processing - consumption, farmers will find it difficult to feel secure in investing in long-term production.
In the coming time, the two communes of Quang Dien and Dan Dien plan to double the current organic rice area, combining with VietGAP and hybrid organic models. Building the Quang Dien - Dan Dien organic rice brand is also set by the authorities of these two localities to increase value and affirm prestige in the market.
The two local authorities also pledged to continue providing technical support, preferential loans, irrigation infrastructure and finding partners to ensure farmers feel secure in expanding production. With the advantage of fertile land, a long tradition of rice cultivation and the support of businesses, Quang Dien and Dan Dien are expected to become key areas for organic rice in Hue City.
