Uncle Ho's special affection for war invalids and martyrs

During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh paid special attention to soldiers, wounded soldiers, sick soldiers, and martyrs’ relatives. Despite being busy with a thousand and one things, every year on July 27, Uncle Ho personally sent letters, gave gifts, and visited wounded soldiers and martyrs’ families.

Affirming the noble meaning of July 27, he said: because it is “an occasion for our people to show their filial piety and charity, to show their love for wounded soldiers”. He called on people across the country to express their love, responsibility and duty through the most practical actions: “During the famine, our people used to skip one meal a week to help their hungry compatriots. Now, when fighting foreign invaders, I am sure our people will be happy to skip one meal every few months to help wounded soldiers. I would like to volunteer to send a silk bra that a woman gave me, my one month salary, a meal of mine and that of the staff at the Presidential Palace, totaling one thousand one hundred and twenty-seven dong”.

In his historic “Will” for the entire Party, the entire army and the entire people, President Ho advised: “Immediately after the complete victory of our people’s resistance against the US, to save the country, the first task for people is to take care of wounded soldiers and those who have contributed to the cause of national liberation and unification. For those who have bravely sacrificed a part of their blood and bones, the Party, the Government and the people must find every way to provide them with a stable place to eat and live, and at the same time open vocational training classes suitable for each person so that they can gradually “be self-reliant”. For martyrs in each locality, it is necessary to build flower gardens and memorial stele to commemorate their heroic sacrifice, to forever educate the spirit of patriotism for our people. For parents, wives and children (of wounded soldiers and martyrs) who lack the ability to work and are in need, the local government must help them find suitable jobs, absolutely not letting them go hungry or cold”.

To express the warm feelings and deep gratitude of the People towards the disabled people for their sacrifices and dedication to the Fatherland, in 1947, President Ho Chi Minh proposed that the Central Committee, branches and organizations meeting in Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen, take July 27, 1947 as "National War Invalids Day". In 1955, "National War Invalids Day" was renamed "War Invalids and Martyrs Day".

Following the teachings of the great President Ho Chi Minh, his feelings for war invalids, martyrs and their relatives have been increasingly deepened by our Party, State and People through activities of "repaying gratitude" to heroic martyrs, wounded and sick soldiers and families of policy beneficiaries. Over nearly 80 years, policies to care for people with meritorious services to the revolution, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, relatives of war invalids, wounded and sick soldiers have been amended and supplemented many times to suit the socio -economic conditions of the country. Currently, the whole country has about 1.4 million people with meritorious services to the revolution and their relatives receiving monthly preferential allowances, and the lives of people with meritorious services have been constantly improved. In general, the preferential regime for people with meritorious services has been built and implemented relatively comprehensively and comprehensively, in addition to subsidies, there are also health care regimes, housing improvements, incentives in healthcare, education - training, production, business, job creation, etc. Up to now, War Invalids and Martyrs Day, July 27, has become a day for the whole nation to remember and show gratitude to those who have contributed to the country.

It can be said that Uncle Ho's thoughts, feelings and advice towards war invalids, families of martyrs and people with revolutionary contributions always have a strong impact. And to satisfy Uncle Ho's expectations, over the years, the Party and State have well implemented policies on war invalids and martyrs, along with practical and meaningful "Repaying gratitude" works and tasks. This is not only a responsibility but also a Vietnamese morality./.
