In the Bible, Jesus is described as healing the sight of a blind beggar by telling him to wash his face in the Pool of Siloam, Jerusalem, Israel.

Recently, archaeologists discovered a massive dam at the site of what was once a lake in the center of the ancient city of Jerusalem.

According to experts, the above construction dates back 2,800 years, during the reign of King Joash and King Amazia in the kingdom of Judah.

The discovery provides a "tangible" link to the site described in the Bible, said excavation director Itamar Berko of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).

According to Director Itamar, experts have excavated a wall of a giant dam more than 11m high, dating back about 2,800 years, from the First Temple period.

"Thanks to highly precise scientific dating methods, this is the first time we have been able to definitively identify a structure that formed the foundation for the construction of the Pool of Siloam - a structure previously known only from the Bible and historical sources," said Director Itamar.

Not only was the dam's wall enormous, it was also more than 8 meters wide and at least 21 meters long. Without this structure, there would be no Siloam Pool.

"This was the lowest point in ancient Jerusalem. All water, including rainwater, flowed into the city's large central drainage basin. Without this dam, the water flowing in this channel would flow directly into the Kidron Valley to the Dead Sea," said co-director Nahshon Szanton.

According to Johanna Regev and Elisabetta Boaretto of the Weizmann Institute of Science, the unusual structure of the wall allows for a very short period of time. Furthermore, unusually low rainfall during this period suggests that the Siloam Pool was built in response to climate change.

Experts say the discovery of the dam is “amazing” and opens up new avenues of research. Many surprises are still waiting for scientists to decipher.
