At a recent UN forum, Yojna Patel, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, called for a more decisive and transparent approach to UNSC reform. She stressed the need for text-based negotiations, an important practice in other multilateral processes but one that has yet to be adopted here.

While acknowledging the efforts of the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process, including the creation of a digital archive and online broadcasting, Ms. Patel pointed out that the progress of reform remains slow and has not met expectations.

Ms Patel also criticised the summary of comments on UNSC reform, saying it was flawed, including conflicting references and a lack of consensus on some points.

She argued that the current draft does not reflect broad consensus among member states, which could affect the legitimacy of the final document.

India continues to support the expansion of the UNSC to reflect current global realities and stands ready to work with other member states to advance these important reforms.
