"Lighting up" reading culture

Young people read books at Hoi An Book Room.

The book room is located right in the campus of Hoi An Park (Hac Thanh ward) - a green and fresh destination. Amidst the tree-lined paths, the chirping of birds and the familiar scent of grass and trees, the book room appears like an "oasis of knowledge", where everyone who visits can stop, read a few pages of a book, breathe slowly and live more deeply with themselves. Entering the book room, everyone will surely be impressed with the open design like a "garden of knowledge" close to nature, full of creative inspiration.

Present at the reading room on a day at the end of June, from the morning, children and parents happily participated in the activity of picking up trash and cleaning the environment at Hoi An Park. After experiencing the practical activities, children and parents and the "leaders" enthusiastically discussed books and environmental content. Ms. Trinh Thi Mai Dung (Hac Thanh ward) and her daughter participated in the happy reading hour activity and shared: "I learned about the reading room through friends. The reading room has many interesting and meaningful activities, not only encouraging children to love books, arousing their passion for reading, but also through the content of each page of the book, the "leaders" here have combined practical activities, closely related to life, then summarized lessons through stories about the content being read. From there, helping children practice life skills, ethics, family love, and sharing with the community".

Ms. Pham Thi Hien, co-founder of Hoi An Book Room, shared: “Happy Reading Hour is an activity built on three elements: ethics, intelligence and determination, with many different topics. The topics of the reading hour are closely linked to practical activities. Thanks to that, children not only read books, learn, and explore knowledge, but also practice life skills and ethics through lessons and practical experience activities.”

Along with happy reading hours, Hoi An Book Room also opens its doors to readers for free, organizes free drawing and English classes during the summer for children to participate in. Choosing his favorite book and enthusiastically exploring , Nguyen Le Hoang, a student at Minh Khai 1 Primary School, said: “For nearly two years now, I have been coming here to read books regularly. Here there is a quiet, relaxing space, many good books and many attractive book introduction activities along with practical activities that help me appreciate the simplest things in life.”

With the desire to spread reading culture in the community, the founders of Hoi An Book Room also regularly organize activities to introduce good books on social networks associated with famous people, great people or events of the country; coordinate with schools in the province to organize reading culture festivals, book reading festivals; connect with authors and speakers to organize seminars, share about the spirit of reading and the value of books for students and teachers...

Along with that, the co-founders of the book room have contributed books together, mobilized readers, publishers... to donate books to the reading room. Up to now, the reading room has more than 2,000 copies of books, in many fields, such as: children's stories, books about history, great people, culture, science , skills... divided into levels: recommended reading books, good books to learn, self-development books, Buddhist ethics books and own books... Books are arranged in small corners according to an open design associated with inspirational quotes about reading culture.

Not only is it different and creative in the decoration space, the arrangement of books and the way activities are organized, but coming to Hoi An Book Room, students, parents and people are inspired and share the culture of reading books in a close and natural way from the passion, love and appreciation of books of the founders of the book room.

Mr. Hoang Trong Thanh, co-founder of Hoi An Book Room, shared: “The book room was built by people who are passionate about reading and have received “sweet fruits” from reading. We all have the desire to “sow” the habit of reading, arouse the passion for reading, spread the reading culture and improve awareness, morality and determination of each person”.

For the founders of Hoi An Book Room, reading culture is like a revolution, so it needs leaders who dare to take the lead and are enthusiastic to build and develop a reading culture. Therefore, the first factor that the co-founders of the book room prioritize is the human factor. They choose companions and associates who not only share the same passion for books but also those who have gone through the process of practicing reading, practicing themselves, practicing ethics, practicing perseverance, and being enthusiastic, always ready to actively participate in all activities to spread reading culture to individuals - families - schools and society.

With the enthusiasm of the “leaders” of reading culture, after more than 1 year of operation, the book room has attracted more than 6,000 readers to visit, 500 readers to borrow books and organized 10 reading culture events in the province, helping to inspire the passion for reading for teachers, students and parents throughout the province. Not only a place to read books, Hoi An Book Room has truly become a destination for those who want to develop themselves comprehensively.
