According to the Financial Times , Apple will cooperate with Samsung to produce new generation image sensor chips for iPhone at a facility in Texas (USA), completely eliminating dependence on Sony.

"Apple is also collaborating with Samsung at its Austin, Texas, facility to introduce a new chip manufacturing technology that has never been used before in the world . By bringing this technology to the United States first, the facility will provide chips that optimize power and performance for Apple products, including iPhones, distributed around the world," the company said in a statement regarding its $600 billion investment in US manufacturing.

Also according to the Financial Times , the chip in question is a 3-layer stacked image sensor, which offers higher pixel density and improved low-light performance by stacking multiple sensor layers vertically. This architecture also offers faster readout speeds, reduced power consumption, and higher dynamic range.

This is a manufacturing process that has never been deployed on a commercial scale. Sources familiar with the matter said the sensor will be supplied by Samsung's System LSI and mass produced by the Korean conglomerate's foundry division.

The Texas-made image sensor is expected to appear in the iPhone 18 series next year. Apple typically begins component validation and mass production well in advance of the launch date, suggesting that the Austin facility is actively preparing for production testing.

The partnership with Samsung also marks the first time Apple has produced image sensors for the iPhone and set up a factory in the U.S. Currently, Sony is the sole supplier of image sensors for the iPhone, which are manufactured in Japan and distributed through TSMC.
