Among the 9 elective subjects including: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography, History, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology and Foreign Languages, there are 2 subjects included in the high school graduation exam for the first time: Information Technology and Technology.
Each elective subject will have 48 exam codes - a record so far. All are in multiple choice format with three types of questions: Multiple choice, true/false, short answer.

Because candidates are seated in a fixed examination room, an elective subject can be taken in both time slots. To ensure security, the number of elective subject codes has doubled compared to previous years, divided equally between the two examination sessions. According to the schedule, the first elective subject is scheduled to start at 7:35 a.m., the second subject at 8:40 a.m. Each subject lasts 50 minutes.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training , History is the subject chosen by most candidates with more than 484,000 students, followed by Geography with more than 494,000; English with nearly 359,000; Physics with more than 354,000.
Chemistry, Biology,Economics and Law all have less than 250,000 candidates.
The two new subjects Technology and Information Technology had the fewest candidates. Of which, Information Technology had 7,700 candidates choosing and the number for Technology was 2,400 candidates.

In Hanoi, the weather is quite cool, convenient for candidates and parents to take their children to the exam sites. Traffic at the exam sites is also reasonably regulated by the police force so there is no congestion.
At the Thanh Xuan Trung Secondary School exam site in Thanh Xuan District (Hanoi), many parents took their children to the exam site early in the morning. Ms. Le Thu Thao, a parent in Ha Dong District (Hanoi), said: "From 6am, I took my daughter to the exam site and saw many other parents also taking their children to the exam site like me. It is truly the heart of parents, whether the exam site is far or near, on this important day, it seems that everyone wants to directly take their children to and from school with the hope of encouraging their spirit and giving them strength before the exam that will decide their future."

Many students also said that they were quite nervous and pressured when entering the optional exam. Nguyen Quynh Hoa, a candidate at Thanh Xuan Trung Secondary School, shared: "On the first day of the exam, I did quite well in the Literature test but felt depressed after the Math test. This year's Math test was both long and difficult, so my score will not be as expected. Therefore, I have to try to do well in the 2 optional exams to be able to get the results for admission to my dream university."
Also on the morning of June 27, candidates taking the 2006 General Education Program will take the Natural Science or Social Science exam, and in the afternoon they will continue with the Foreign Language exam.
