>> Tran Yen strives to plant and renovate 150 hectares of mulberry by 2025
>> Tran Yen is about to reach 1,000 hectares of mulberry
>> Tran Yen greens the mulberry fields again
Visiting Mrs. Tran Thi Lien’s strawberry garden in Lan Dinh village, Thanh Thinh commune, we were amazed by the changes. Last year, the historic flood caused by storm No. 3 caused her family to lose the entire harvest when about 7 sao of strawberries were submerged under water. However, with perseverance and constant efforts, Mrs. Lien has rebuilt her business.
"Last year, we lost everything, but this year is very promising. The weather is favorable, the strawberries are growing well. My strawberry area this year is also larger than last year, about 1 hectare more" - Ms. Lien shared with a bright smile.
She estimated that after deducting expenses, this year's mulberry crop could bring in more than 30 million VND, a significant source of income for her family. Like Ms. Lien, Ms. Luu Thi Tuyet, a person with many years of experience in silkworm farming, said: "The situation of silkworm farming this year is generally stable, the weather is not too hot, so it is still possible to raise silkworms. Although silkworms sometimes get sick due to instability, we still provide a large amount of silkworm seeds for people from the beginning of the season." She further explained the silkworm farming process, from eggs to cocoons takes about 20 days and people can raise 2-3 batches of silkworms per month.
The strong recovery of Tran Yen's mulberry industry cannot be without the guidance and support of the local government. Mr. Nguyen Minh Thanh - Secretary of Thanh Thinh Commune Party Committee said: "The commune currently has 285 hectares of mulberry, of which 30.7 hectares have been newly planted since the beginning of 2025. To improve productivity and quality, the commune has proactively introduced new mulberry varieties from Lam Dong . Currently, the new mulberry growing area is developing very well, being enthusiastically cared for and improved by the people. In the coming time, the commune will continue to mobilize people to improve the land and increase the mulberry growing area".
This effort is part of the comprehensive development strategy of the mulberry industry in Tran Yen district. After the historic flood last September affected more than 700 hectares of mulberry, of which about 100 hectares died and had to be replanted, the district focused all resources to support the people. To date, the lightly damaged areas have almost completely recovered, and the replanted areas are expected to be harvested in the near future.
According to statistics, in 2024, despite the difficulties caused by natural disasters, the Tran Yen mulberry industry still achieved encouraging results. The whole district maintained nearly 1,000 hectares of mulberry, the annual cocoon output was estimated at about 1,500 tons, bringing in an economic value of nearly 300 billion VND.
Entering the first months of 2025, after overcoming the consequences of the flood at the end of 2024, the Tran Yen mulberry industry continues to show positive signs. The district aims to increase the total mulberry area to over 1,100 hectares in 2025, with a plan to plant 100 hectares and renovate 50 hectares. As of April 19, the district has planted nearly 73 hectares of mulberry. Cocoon output in 2025 is expected to reach nearly 2,000 tons, bringing an estimated value of nearly 400 billion VND. New high-yield mulberry varieties such as S7-CB and F1GQ2 continue to be expanded. Notably, in January 2025, Quy Mong commune was supported with more than 30 tons of S7-CB mulberry varieties and the KOPIA Project continued to support 5.5 hectares of GQ2 mulberry varieties for Thanh Thinh commune.
The recovery and strong development of the mulberry industry not only brings high economic value, improves the lives of nearly 2,000 households but also affirms the right direction of Tran Yen district in restructuring the agricultural sector. From difficulties and challenges, Tran Yen people have been writing the story of rising up, turning mulberry fields into symbols of vitality and prosperity.
