Participating in the FIFA Club World Cup is definitely a great opportunity for the world's top clubs to get attractive bonuses.
However, in parallel, FIFA has found a remarkable way to partially offset the costs of organization and prize money by directly fining teams for every card their players receive.
According to information posted by DAZN and later confirmed by teams like Inter Milan, the tournament organizers have applied a clear fee schedule for on-field fouls. Teams will have to pay FIFA with specific fees as follows:
Gold Card: $12,500
Indirect red card (from 2 yellow cards): 18,770 USD.
Direct red card: 25,000 USD.
Unsportsmanlike conduct of the entire team: $18,770.
This rule applies to all participating clubs.
Surprisingly, this regulation has brought in a lot of money for FIFA. According to statistics up to the current time of the tournament, the World Football Federation is said to have earned a total of 2.45 million USD just from card fines.
This figure shows that this is not a small amount of income, but a deliberate source of revenue for FIFA. It puts a new perspective on the commercial side of the tournament, where every action on the field, including individual mistakes, can be converted into money.
While fans and pundits are still debating the rationale of this rule, it is clear that FIFA has turned the Club World Cup into a "money-making machine" in unexpected ways.
For clubs, keeping a cool head and playing with discipline now not only makes tactical sense, but also has direct financial value.
