Specifically, according to data for the 2024-2025 school year, nearly 2,500 students dropped out of school, an increase of 16.7% compared to 2023 and marking a record increase since the data was compiled in 2007. Most of them switched to medical school because the Government increased enrollment quotas for this field after 27 years of freezing.
The unusual increase is believed to be linked to the special appeal of medicine in South Korea. This year’s increase in medical school enrollment has created a strong incentive for many students to take the risk of dropping out and focus on retaking the exam. The private Jongro Education Institute said that most of them took the college entrance exam with the sole purpose of applying to medical schools.
By field of study, natural science students accounted for the largest number with 1.4 thousand cases, followed by humanities with 917 and sports and entertainment with 70. Compared to 2022, the number of students leaving humanities increased by more than 20%, while natural sciences increased by more than 13%.
Experts say that although the expected medical quota is adjusted downward next year, the trend of students pursuing this field will continue.
