After China, Vietnamese enterprises want to build trillion-dollar 'apartments' to raise pigs

In response to the enterprise's proposal to build high-rise apartment buildings to raise pigs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD) has just submitted a report and asked for the Prime Minister's opinion.

In the submission, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment cited a series of documents as legal basis, in which livestock farms are encouraged to apply high technology, advanced technology, and new technology to improve productivity, quality, ensure biosafety, and protect the environment. These are the Law on Livestock; Livestock Development Strategy for the period 2021-2030, vision 2045; Project "Development of livestock barn industry and treatment of livestock waste by 2030"...

In particular, Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo requested promoting the application of scientific and technological achievements, especially digital technology, to optimize production processes and environmental management.

Regarding specific standards, in 2024, Vietnam issued TCVN 14209:2024 stipulating general requirements for multi-storey pig farms; breeding processes, veterinary hygiene, biosafety and waste treatment.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, pig farming is a key industry in Vietnam, accounting for 62-65% of total meat output of all kinds.

In 2024, the output of live pigs for slaughter will reach nearly 5.2 million tons, accounting for 4.3% of the total global pork output, ranking 6th in the world . Vietnamese pork consumption ranks 4th in the world, increasing from 30 kg of pork/person/year (2021) to 37.04 kg of pork/person/year (2024).

However, in the period 2019-2020, small-scale farming still accounts for a large proportion. Economic and technical indicators are still low, not meeting biosafety and disease control standards. Therefore, when African swine fever occurred, more than 9 million pigs had to be destroyed, causing losses of more than 30,000 billion VND.

In April 2020, the price of live pigs at slaughterhouses increased to 105,000 VND/kg at one point, directly affecting the domestic consumer price index (CPI) to increase by 6.73%.

Up to now, BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company and Xuan Thien Thanh Hoa Joint Stock Company have sent documents to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment asking for opinions on implementing a pig farming model in multi-storey houses.

In particular, BAF Vietnam has a strategic partnership with Muyuan Group (China), the world's largest pig farming unit, to propose a smart 6-storey pig farm complex project in Tay Ninh. The project has a scale of 64,000 breeding sows, producing 1.6 million commercial pigs/year; the total estimated investment is over 12,000 billion VND.

When operating at full capacity, the project can bring BAF Vietnam annual revenue of VND12,000-13,000 billion, with an expected payback period of 5-5.5 years.

Based on the above reality, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment asked for the opinion of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to allow the implementation of a multi-storey pig farming model in Vietnam.

China has 4,500 apartment buildings raising pigs, solving the meat crisis

Citing the multi-storey pig farming model that has been implemented for many years in China, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that pork is also a major food, accounting for more than 60% of the total meat consumption in this country.

It is the world's largest producer and consumer of pork, accounting for nearly 50% of global production.

However, the African swine fever outbreak in 2018 killed or destroyed about 40-50% of the total pig herd (equivalent to 200-250 million pigs) and forced about 40% of small-scale pig farms to close. As a result, pork supply dropped dramatically, from 54 million tons in 2018 to 36 million tons in 2019.

Supply pressure has caused pork prices to skyrocket, up 300% in November 2019 compared to the same period in 2018.

On the other hand, limited agricultural land and environmental pollution from livestock farming have hindered production expansion.

To address the above challenges, the Chinese government has promoted high-tech and modernized solutions in livestock farming.

In 2018, China began implementing a multi-storey pig farming model. To date, China has more than 2,000 models and nearly 4,500 high-rise buildings raising pigs; providing about 2.65 million breeding sows and more than 30 million pigs for meat each year. Notably, there are "apartment buildings" raising pigs in China that are up to 26 stories high.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment believes that the model of raising pigs in multi-storey houses has many outstanding advantages compared to traditional farming.

Accordingly, in pig farming apartments, modern technology and smart farming are applied such as: AI, Blockchain, sensor monitoring, real-time image and sound collection of each individual pig to analyze and warn of disease early, estimate daily body weight gain, sales volume...

Not only that, the level of biosafety and disease safety is enhanced through smart wastewater, waste and exhaust gas treatment systems.

In addition, the model also saves land area and shared infrastructure; shortens site clearance time, increases land use efficiency up to 4.3 times; saves labor when one person can supervise 2,000 pigs, improving livestock farming efficiency.

This model initially contributes to solving the problems of food security, disease safety, and environmental protection in pig farming in China, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment emphasized.

CP Vietnam dominates the pork market, Vietnamese 'big guys' want to build 2 apartments for 84,000 pigsThe pork market is like a giant cake that is getting bigger and bigger as Vietnamese people consume this food at the top of the world. If we count sows, CP Vietnam dominates the market, but Vietnamese 'big guys' are also accelerating.
