The Emergency Department - Ninh Binh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital recently admitted female patient NAN (7 years old, Kim Son, Ninh Binh) after being bitten by a krait in the 3rd hour.

The family said that the child was sleeping alone on the second floor, and at around 3am a krait came out of the air conditioner and crawled onto the child. At around 7am, seeing the child acting strangely, the family immediately took the child to the emergency room.

After receiving the child, the doctors examined and discovered that he had drooping eyelids, paralysis of the soft palate, difficulty speaking, limited mouth opening, dry heaving, and a bite mark on the right thigh - accompanied by rapidly progressing respiratory failure.

Along with the image of the snake provided by the family, the doctors determined that this was a case of poisoning caused by a krait bite. The patient was immediately treated with intubation to help him breathe. Next, the child was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care - Anti-Poison Department for intensive treatment.

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Tai, this is a very typical case of poisoning caused by a krait bite. Kraits belong to the cobra family, so most cases of krait bites will result in muscle paralysis leading to respiratory failure and death if not promptly and actively treated with emergency resuscitation measures, especially mechanical ventilation.

After treatment, the patient has overcome the critical stage, gradually been weaned off the ventilator and is recovering well.

Through this case, the doctor recommends: Parents need to supervise children when playing in areas with dense trees, bushes or places suspected of having snakes; Provide children with long-sleeved clothes and high-top shoes if they have to go into the forest or garden; Teach children not to play with snakes or tease strange animals.

If a child is unfortunately bitten by a snake, it is necessary to stay calm, keep the victim still, and immobilize the bitten limb to limit the spread of venom. Do not apply a tourniquet, do not cut the wound, and do not suck the venom out with your mouth. At the same time, it is necessary to take the child to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible, preferably within the first hour after being bitten.
