Up to 800 million people worldwide suffer from low back pain, which is a leading cause of disability and reduced quality of life. Recurrent episodes of low back pain are also common, with 7 out of 10 people experiencing remission experiencing a recurrence within a year.

A clinical trial by the Macquarie University Spinal Pain Research Group (Australia) looked at whether walking could be an effective, cost-effective and accessible treatment for low back pain.

The trial followed more than 700 adults who had recently recovered from lower back pain. Participants were divided into two groups. One group participated in a walking program and received physical therapy instruction for six months, and a control group.

Researchers followed participants for between 1 and 3 years.

The findings could have profound implications for how low back pain is managed, said lead author Mark Hancock, professor of physiotherapy at Macquarie University.

The study results showed that the walking group had fewer pain attacks than the control group and a longer period of pain remission before recurrence, an average of 208 days compared to 112 days in the control group, he said, according to Medical Express.

Walking is a simple exercise that almost anyone can participate in, Professor Hancock shared. This simple exercise includes a combination of gentle movements, strengthening the spinal structure, muscles, relaxing and reducing stress, while releasing endorphins, the happy hormone that creates a pleasant feeling.

Walking also has many other health benefits, including heart health, bone density and improved mental health, Professor Hancock added.

Co-author Dr Natasha Pocovi, a physiotherapist at Macquarie University, said that in addition to helping people stay in remission for longer, walking was also cost-effective. It not only improved people’s quality of life but also reduced their need for treatment and time off work by about half.
