Ceremony scene
June 5th of every year is chosen by the United Nations Environment Program as World Environment Day. This is an important international environmental event that Vietnam has responded to, organized annually since 1982 and has now become a widespread movement across the country.
World Environment Day 2025 was launched by the United Nations Environment Program with the theme "Combating Plastic Pollution", calling on the global community to take drastic action to address plastic waste - one of the most urgent environmental challenges today; at the same time, improve the efficiency of resource use, protect biodiversity, move towards a circular economy and sustainable development, increase recycling and reuse, promote the building of a green economy, and effectively implement anti-plastic waste policies.
This is the second time in three years (2023-2025) that this theme has been chosen, demonstrating the determination of the global anti-plastic waste movement.
Delegates attending the launching ceremony
According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, the world produces about 430 million tons of plastic each year, of which more than two-thirds are single-use products that quickly become waste, polluting the environment and seriously affecting the ecosystem and human health.
In Vietnam, it is estimated that about 1.8 million tons of plastic waste are generated each year, but only about 27% is recycled, the rest is mostly buried, burned or discharged into canals, ditches, rivers, streams and then led to lagoons and the sea, causing waste of resources and posing many potential risks to the environment.
In Binh Dinh province, according to statistics, the total amount of domestic waste generated in the province is currently about 1,000 tons per day; of which, there are about 100 tons of plastic waste, but the collection, classification, recycling and reuse have not been carried out synchronously and thoroughly.
Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh spoke at the ceremony.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh said that since 2023, the Provincial People's Committee has focused on directing and implementing many synchronous solutions to solve problems related to the management of domestic solid waste, addressing the concerns of localities and people about environmental pollution caused by domestic waste; calling for investment in waste treatment plants using advanced technology, gradually replacing current landfills. At the same time, localities are required to focus on developing and implementing plans as well as many models of waste classification at source, minimizing and reusing plastic waste.
Compared to 2023, up to now, the rate of urban household waste collected and treated has increased from 83% to 94.82% and from 53% to 78.82% in rural areas. Socialization and calling for investment in waste treatment in some localities have been focused on. The policy of reducing plastic waste has been responded to by all levels, sectors and the majority of people. Agencies and units have signed a commitment to reduce plastic waste, and to switch from using plastic bottles in meetings to using glass bottles. At shopping centers, supermarkets and markets in the province, the use of disposable plastic products in food services has been limited; some businesses, service establishments and households have used environmentally friendly materials to replace plastic bags and disposable plastic products, etc.
On behalf of the provincial leaders, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh commended all levels, sectors, associations and people of the whole province for their efforts to bring about encouraging results in environmental protection and plastic waste reduction in recent times.
In the coming time, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh requested authorities at all levels, departments, branches, sectors and socio- political organizations to be more determined in implementing environmental protection, managing household waste, and reducing plastic waste in daily life and production.

In particular, it is necessary to focus on implementing the following main tasks and solutions: Do not use disposable plastic products at the headquarters of agencies and units; strengthen propaganda and mobilization to raise public awareness, especially among students and women, in environmental protection, reducing household waste and plastic waste. Develop detailed plans and allocate funds to ensure synchronous implementation of classification, collection, transportation and treatment of household waste to achieve the set goals; replicate effective models of reducing and moving towards not using disposable plastic products, models of waste classification, reduction and reuse, and recycling of plastic waste. Strengthen mobilization of people to pay for waste collection services; at the same time, regularly organize environmental cleaning activities, eliminate black spots of pollution caused by waste and plastic waste in rivers, lakes and beaches. Continue to promote investment, call for socialization to accelerate the implementation of waste treatment plants with advanced and modern technology in the province to ensure thorough waste treatment.
When implementing the policy of organizing two-level local government, the People's Committee at the district level needs to proactively pay attention to and propose reorganizing the waste collection, transportation and treatment network in the area in a streamlined and effective manner to promptly respond to waste management, including plastic waste, in each locality.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tuan Thanh also called on all people in the province to join in environmental protection, change their behavior and habits to reduce waste, each family and each person to "say no to single-use plastic products"; join hands to build Binh Dinh province to be increasingly green - clean - beautiful, a livable place and a destination for many domestic and international tourists.
