Trump lost in the first debate?

Báo Công lýBáo Công lý15/09/2024

US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump had a heated debate on the evening of September 10. With harsh and direct criticism, Ms. Kamala continuously forced Mr. Trump to fall into a defensive position.

With just eight weeks to go until Election Day, both Harris and Trump tried to make their case to voters in a 90-minute debate. Meeting on stage for the first time in Philadelphia, the two presidential candidates touched on flashpoints including inflation, abortion, immigration and foreign policy. However, the debate did not address specific policies.

Harris's aggressive approach has delighted her allies, and some Republicans have acknowledged that Trump has been put in a difficult position. A survey by the market prediction site PredictIt showed that Trump's chances of winning had dropped from 52% to 47% after the debate. Harris's odds had risen from 53% to 55%. Confident in the outcome of the debate, Harris's campaign immediately challenged Trump to a second debate. This one is especially important for Harris, after polls showed that more than a quarter of likely voters said they did not know her well. Harris delivered pointed remarks, accusing Trump of "disdain for people." Trump, who at times appeared to lose his cool, often framed his arguments as rebuttals rather than attacks. Hours after the debate, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shook hands at the 9/11 memorial in New York during a ceremony to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks.

After replacing President Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee, Ms. Harris rode a wave of enthusiasm at the Democratic convention and brought her record fundraising numbers. On September 12, Ms. Harris will travel to North Carolina - one of the few states expected to decide the election - where she has toppled Mr. Trump's lead to a tie. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump will take the stage in Tucson, Arizona, with a campaign speech focusing on "the struggling economy and rising housing costs."
