North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will soon visit Russia on an official visit at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin announced on September 11.
"At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chairman of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un will pay an official visit to Russia in the coming days," Russian news agency TASS quoted the Kremlin's announcement as saying.
On the North Korean side, Yonhap news agency quoted the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) as saying on September 11 that leader Kim Jong Un will "soon" visit Russia to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Mr. Kim's special train to Russia.
The confirmation came after comments by South Korean government officials that a special train believed to be carrying Mr Kim appeared to have departed for Russia, although it was not yet confirmed whether Mr Kim was on board, Yonhap said.
However, neither KCNA nor TASS provided further details, including when Mr Kim would arrive in Russia or when the meeting would take place.

According to TASS, the last time Mr. Kim visited Russia was in April 2019, when he and Mr. Putin met in the Russian Far Eastern city of Vladivostok for the first Russia-North Korea summit. At that time, the two leaders had both direct talks and talks between the two delegations.
According to Sputnik, after the Summit, Russian President Putin called North Korean President Kim Jong Un "a very open person", saying that the two had detailed and open discussions about sanctions, the US and denuclearization.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kim thanked Mr. Putin for the direct and substantive dialogue on issues of mutual concern and expressed hope that the talks would continue in a similarly constructive manner. The summit lasted 3.5 hours, with the two leaders spending nearly 2 hours in direct talks.
The two leaders have also communicated in other formats. For example, Putin congratulated Kim on his election as North Korea's leader. Most recently, in July, the Russian president sent a congratulatory message to Kim on the 70th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the Korean War, which is known in the country as Victory Day.
The Russian leader also maintained the tradition of congratulating his North Korean counterpart on the anniversary of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula (August 15). According to reports from Pyongyang, Mr. Kim also sent congratulatory messages to Mr. Putin on national holidays or anniversaries in Russia and responded to congratulatory messages.
Also in July, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu visited Pyongyang. Shoigu met with Kim and gave him a personal message and a gift from Putin .
