Volcano erupts in Russia after 7.0 magnitude earthquake

"According to visual assessments, the ash column rose up to 8 km above sea level," TASS news agency reported early Sunday local time, adding that the volcano had erupted a lava flow.

TASS further reported that there was no "major damage" caused by the earthquake, however, "buildings are currently being checked for possible damage".

The Shiveluch volcano is about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a port city of more than 181,000 people, surrounded by volcanoes and located across from a major Russian submarine base.

Earlier, the US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 29 km below the surface and the epicenter was about 102 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning but was later lifted.
