Hot: Thailand shocked, announced to test athletes' gender at SEA Games 33

According to the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), female athletes from the LGBTQ+ community, when participating in the 33rd SEA Games, will be tested for gender if necessary, depending on the sport and the rules of the respective sports federation.

According to Mr. Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of SAT, this agency will monitor the general situation regarding the issue of gender testing of athletes at the 33rd SEA Games. In particular, if any sport requires testing, SAT affirms that the testing must be carried out in accordance with regulations. And also believes that athletes will not be able to avoid it.

SEA Games 33 continues to heat up with many issues such as whether Cambodian sports will participate or not and gender testing of athletes.

According to Siamsport , in the immediate future, some sports including women's volleyball and women's boxing at the 33rd SEA Games will definitely apply strict testing regulations for female athletes from the LGBTQ+ community if they participate in the competition.

However, Mr. Kongsak Yodmanee said: "This still depends on the sport and the rules of the respective sports federation. The reason is that each sport has different rules. Some sports, such as combat sports, have clear physical advantages and disadvantages that require testing. On the other hand, other sports do not place special emphasis on this issue, because physiological factors do not significantly affect competition, so testing is not required."

Mr. Kongsak Yodmanee also emphasized that SAT will assign each sports federation to monitor the rules and technical issues of competition at the 33rd SEA Games. Thereby, it will also consult on the issue of whether or not to conduct gender testing on athletes, to avoid causing unfortunate incidents and controversies like recently. SAT will monitor the general situation and if any sport requires testing, this agency will proceed to implement it.

The 33rd SEA Games held in Thailand at the end of this year will take place from December 9 to 20, in three major cities: Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla.

Currently, some sports delegations such as Thailand have announced the number of participants up to 2,134 people (including athletes, coaches, officials...), followed by Malaysia with 1,824 people, Singapore with 1,973 people and the Vietnamese sports delegation with 863 people.

Other delegations including Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei and Timor Leste, have requested an extension of the deadline for announcing their SEA Games 33 rosters and are expected to submit their final numbers before September 1.
