Rekindle old love

It is easy to succeed because Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump have had a good, close and trustworthy personal relationship since Mr. Trump's first term as president and because the US and India have had a strategic partnership for many decades.

Mr. Trump returned to power in the US but did not repeat the same policy views and implementation methods of his first term, including towards India and Mr. Modi.

Therefore, Mr. Modi proactively renewed his old friendship with Mr. Trump to avoid harming India by Mr. Trump's drastic ruling decisions, to adapt India's bilateral relationship with the US to the change of administration in the US in the most beneficial way for India, and to avoid India being affected by Mr. Trump's attacks on other countries.

In the time before his trip to the US to meet Mr. Trump again, Mr. Modi proactively made moves that made Mr. Trump very pleased. Mr. Modi proactively proposed to meet and discuss directly with Mr. Trump, proactively raised the issue of overcoming India's trade surplus with the US, proactively lowered many tax lines on US goods exported to India. In particular, Mr. Modi also proactively proposed new ideas and cooperation projects with the US in the fields of energy, weapons procurement, defense and security. The strategy of combining "using softness to control hardness" and "avoiding elephants without shame" seems to be highly effective for Mr. Modi in this foreign mission.
