At 1:30 a.m. on September 9, while it was still raining heavily, the rumbling sound from the dirt mountain area behind the Thanh Tin Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities (Thanh Tin border commune, Tuyen Quang province) became intense and unusual.
Just a few minutes later, the flood brought with it dirt, rocks and mud that rushed down the campus.

“When we heard the sound of water pouring down like thunder, we hurriedly called each other to run out of the room. In the pitch-black darkness, everyone panicked and rushed to the boarding house to wake up the students. At that moment, mud poured down from above. Everyone was scared but had to stay calm to wake each student up.
Some students were still sleepy and did not understand what was happening. They were helped out by their teachers. After only a few minutes, when they looked back at the house for sale, mud had knocked down the iron sliding door, and all their household items were swept away by the water," teacher Nguyen Thi Hong, a teacher at Thanh Tin Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, recounted with unending fear.

Realizing the increasing danger, the school's Board of Directors immediately contacted the Commune Police, Border Guard officers and soldiers, and local militia.
A few minutes later, the forces arrived, coordinating with teachers to organize the evacuation of students. In the flickering flashlights in the middle of the rainy night, groups of students were taken out of the danger zone by teachers, soldiers, and militia. Many elementary school students were so frightened that they burst into tears, clinging to their teachers' hands, but thanks to timely encouragement and reassurance, all students were brought out safely, avoiding disaster.

“The school, the staff, and the students had a sleepless night,” said Mr. Nguyen Thien Ha, Principal of Thanh Tin Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities.
Mr. Nguyen Thien Ha said that from the time the floodwaters came until all the students were evacuated from the dangerous area, teachers and forces had almost no time to rest. All night long, everyone took turns carrying and guiding each child across the muddy road, encouraging and soothing them to calm down. When the children were temporarily in a safe place, teachers returned to the school to check the situation, coordinate with the army, police, and militia to clear mud and move salvageable furniture.
“This was the first time flash floods had occurred in the area. That night was longer than any other night, no one dared to sleep, just praying for the rain to stop so that the students could be safe,” said Mr. Nguyen Thien Ha.

According to initial statistics, flash floods caused 3 concrete embankments in the campus of Thanh Tin Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities to collapse, more than 200 cubic meters of soil and rock flooded into the classrooms and boarding areas. All mattresses, blankets, clothes, and school and daily necessities were almost completely damaged.
Mr. Nguyen Thien Ha worried: "It is truly heartbreaking, all the efforts of teachers and students to provide food and accommodation for the children are now almost empty-handed."
Teachers were choked up when they saw the students’ dormitories filled with mud, blankets, books and notebooks buried and soaked. Many students were still shocked and worried when they remembered the floodwaters that suddenly came down in the night.
On September 9, Thanh Tin commune mobilized maximum local forces to overcome the consequences.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Tuc, Chief of Thanh Tin Commune Police, said: “The amount of soil and rock that has flooded into the school campus is currently very large. The Commune Police have mobilized officers and soldiers to be present at the scene, coordinating with other forces, focusing on cleaning up mud and soil, and checking the level of danger of damaged facilities.”
In an emergency, the school arranged for students to temporarily stay at the headquarters of the People's Committee of Thanh Tin commune (old). The local government also quickly stepped in, supporting the school to purchase additional essential items for the students' boarding activities, and at the same time mobilizing human resources to clean up and overcome the consequences of the flood.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh Tin commune informed: "Local authorities are coordinating with the school to assess the damage, deploy remedial measures, and ensure early stabilization of accommodation and study for students.
The commune government hopes to receive cooperation and support from organizations and individuals so that teachers and students of Thanh Tin Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities can overcome difficulties and soon stabilize teaching and learning."
