Barca director Deco recently revealed that Nico Williams expressed his desire to join the La Liga champions. The Catalan team is prepared to pay 58 million euros as part of the contract release clause.
However, in a surprising development today, Athletic Bilbao announced a new 10-year deal for Nico Williams, with a 50% higher release clause than before.
Nico decided to stay at the club he has been with since the age of 11 and continue to play alongside his brother Inaki Williams.
Sharing on Bilbao's homepage, Nico Williams said: "When you make a decision, for me, the most important thing is the heart.
I'm where I want to be with everyone. This is my home. Aupa Athletic!"
Since his professional debut in Bilbao's first team (2021), Nico Williams has made 167 appearances and scored 31 goals.
As for Barcelona, the rejection is a heavy blow to them, because sporting director Deco once stated that recruiting a winger is the club's priority this summer.
The names at the top of the list are Nico Williams and Luis Diaz, both of whom are untouchable, Barca could turn to MU's Marcus Rashford.
