Typical examples of hill restoration

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Originally a part of Bim Son town (old), the new Quang Trung ward has many rolling hills bordering Ninh Binh province, some areas are still quite remote. In recent years, many households have taken on contracts to transform many barren hills into highly effective economic models.

Typical examples of hill restoration

Tea garden on reclaimed hill land of Mr. Trinh Van Loi, Quang Trung ward.

Behind Mr. Trinh Van Loi's spacious house is a gently sloping hill covered with green trees. He has developed this 1.1 hectare hill in Quarter 8 of Bac Son Ward (old) into a comprehensive economic model for year-round income. Under the sparsely planted pomelo trees to avoid blocking the light are rows of straight tea trees along the contour lines of the hillside. In the areas far from his house, he has reserved space to plant fruit trees such as longan and dragon fruit.

It is known that Mr. Loi is originally from Quang Truong commune, Quang Xuong district (old). After many years working in Bim Son, he got married and settled down, so Quang Trung ward became his second hometown. “The land used to be a wild hill, and since 1998 I have only contracted it to renovate it. For many years, I have been clearing away bushes and thorns with a lot of sweat and effort. After that, I had to gradually renovate the land, reclaiming the land and planting fruit trees. In the early years, I planted dragon fruit and longan, but I saw that the results were not high, so I gradually switched to grapefruit. The largest area was used for experimental tea planting, and after success, it was developed on a large scale,” said Mr. Loi.

According to Mr. Loi, he was probably the first person to grow tea on a large scale in an intensive manner in this Quang Trung land. Currently, his tea hills, which are dozens of years old, are still growing well, confirming their suitability to the climate and soil here. In addition to picking tea buds, he also has traders come every day to buy green tea leaves to supply to markets in Bim Son town (old) and Ninh Binh province.

On the land of nearly 1,000m2 in front of the house adjacent to the main road, he developed a bonsai garden. Many bonsai trees were pruned by him, creating valuable works of art. The entire hill has become a rich farming area. The two crops with the highest income are dragon fruit, about 40 million VND, and tea, about 50 million VND per year. The total profit of the garden reaches more than 100 million VND per year, creating stable jobs for 2 family workers and some hired workers picking tea by the day.

In the same ward, the hills and mountain ranges continuously curve to form many valleys bordering Ninh Binh province. Up to now, many areas are still left fallow with reeds and wild plants. However, a model of commercial orange and grapefruit growing using high technology has been formed for many years. The owner of the model is Ms. Le Thi Sanh, 73 years old, a retired worker who bid for the fallow land in the hill area to be renovated. “In 2009, my family bid for this remote and isolated hill area, at that time there was no road or electricity. In the early years, wherever the renovation was done, my family planted pineapples and sugarcane. Taking short-term to support long-term, the restored area was gradually increased, and from 2015, I gradually replaced it with an orchard”.

Currently, Mrs. Sanh's orange and grapefruit farm has been developed to nearly 10 hectares on sloping land and 6 hectares specializing in growing pineapples on the flat foothills. Since having electricity, her family has applied scientific advances to production. The hillsides are vast and steep, but the high-capacity pump system has brought water and dissolved nutrients to each tree root. The drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems worth billions of dong were completed many years ago. During the harvest season, every week many trucks from Ninh Binh province and northern traders bring trucks to the farm to pick oranges. The green-skinned grapefruits and pink-fleshed grapefruits grown on fertile hillside soil, with enough organic fertilizer, are of no less quality than those grown in the southern provinces, and the transportation costs are reduced, so there are more customers.

According to Ms. Sanh's calculations, in recent years, orange trees have brought in about 800 million VND in income, late-ripening longans about 100 million VND, grapefruits more than 100 million VND and about 500 million VND from pineapple hills. In addition, the distant hills that have not been renovated are where the family raises large-scale goat herds and semi-wild chicken flocks, which also bring in significant additional income. A production area of more than 15 hectares has been established, creating jobs for dozens of local workers.

In Quang Trung ward, there are currently more than 30 farms and ranches in the Thung Con area that are developing effective production. Most of these comprehensive economic models were converted from fallow hills and productive forests more than ten years ago. Many dynamic hill and forest owners have introduced new varieties of plants and livestock into farming and cultivation, and applied scientific advances to production stages, bringing in profits of hundreds, even billions of dong each year. The fallow hills and remote areas are gradually becoming green economic zones in the Northeast of the province.
