The book was compiled by author Dang Kim Tram, who is also the younger sister of martyr Dang Thuy Tram. Author Dang Kim wrote the book based on the diary of doctor Dang Thuy Tram written before leaving to serve on the southern battlefield. The book helps readers better understand the portrait of Dang Thuy Tram with youth, knowledge and full of life ideals.

According to Ms. Dang Kim Tram, the book "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary" was first published in 2005, based on two volumes of the diary of doctor and martyr Dang Thuy Tram that were lost during a sweep and were captured by the American army, then returned to her family. Therefore, the family called them the first and second volumes, published in a condensed version of "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary".

This published book is called the third diary, but it is actually the first, written by Dr. Dang Thuy Tram in the last 2 years, before going to the South.

This diary, sent by Dang Thuy Tram to her mother, Doan Ngoc Tram, has been kept by her for decades. Now the family has decided to publish it and call it "The Third Diary".

According to author Dang Kim Tram, the family decided to publish the third diary on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the publication of "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary" with the desire to bring a more complete image of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram. These are memories of her childhood, her family, her early years, as well as Dang Thuy Tram's concerns when she was a student, her dreams and aspirations for a scientific career, a literary career, wanting to be happy and wanting to live in peace ...

In addition to the stories on the battlefield, the book also gives readers a very different perspective on the concerns and reasons for being human, on the dream of curing patients, on the mission of citizens when the country was divided. From then on, along with many young people from the North, not afraid of sacrifice and hardship, Dang Thuy Tram determined to go to the southern battlefield.

Editor Nguyen Thi Anh Ngan is the one who edited and completed the book before it reached readers. She was also the one who went to Duc Pho, Quang Ngai to learn more about the female doctor and martyr Dang Thuy Tram. That trip also left a lot of impressions on her.

Ms. Anh Ngan said that when she came to Duc Pho, where Dr. Dang Thuy Tram sacrificed her life, after the merger of localities, a commune was named after Dang Thuy Tram. In Duc Pho, Dr. Dang Thuy Tram was loved by the people there like a family member. The affection of the people there helped her understand more about a young girl, born and raised in Hanoi , just graduated, living in a peaceful city but ready to give up everything to follow the call of the Fatherland.

Editor Anh Ngan also shared the story of meeting people who had been with Dr. Dang Thuy Tram during the war, including a sworn brother of the doctor, and he recounted how the wartime infirmary had to compete with the enemy for civilian "patients".

Ms. Anh Ngan recounted that the place where Dr. Dang Thuy Tram sacrificed her life has now become a relic, the road is very difficult to get to, even young people have difficulty going there. That is because this place has been renovated, embellished, and roads have been built, not to mention the harsh and fierce war conditions. In Duc Pho, the female doctor and martyr has been "embraced" by the people, because of her dedication and sacrifice. "There are lands, heroes that only when we come to that land, can we fully feel the meaning of the hero's attachment to that land", - Ms. Anh Ngan shared.

Author Dang Kim Tram also shared about the time when her family received the news of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram's death: "For 3 years, my family was still worried, hoping that it was a false report, because they had not received any documents. It was not until the Department of War Invalids and Social Affairs informed them that they would come to deliver the death certificate and hold a memorial service that the whole family believed it was true. My parents did not say anything, quietly and calmly attending the memorial service. But I don't know how my parents would feel when it was just the two of them."

Talking about the book “Dang Thuy Tram and the Third Diary”, researcher Ha Thanh Van said that the book deeply reflects the depth of thought and personality of martyr Dang Thuy Tram. Through the book, her family has “continued” her 20s with love, memories and contributed to the development of a literary genre called diary…

“More than just a simple manuscript, the third diary is a precious “sediment layer”, from which we can see the depth of Dang Thuy Tram’s thoughts and personality. At the same time, this is also the result of many years of careful collection and preservation by family members, the “silent storytellers” who have continued to write Dang Thuy Tram’s life with love and memories. This book can be seen as a contribution to the literature of nostalgia and memories” – researcher Ha Thanh Van said.
