The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the temperature in New Delhi rose to a record 52.9 degrees Celsius on May 29. Specifically, the temperature in Mungeshpur district of New Delhi exceeded 50 degrees Celsius for the first time in the history of the Indian capital.

The record temperature was 9 degrees Celsius higher than expected and came on Monday after Mungeshpur and Narela hit 49.9 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 49.2 degrees Celsius set in 2002.

IMD warns that extreme heat is taking a toll on human health, especially on children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. The Indian agency predicts that the risk of heat-related illnesses and heatstroke is rising across all age groups, and special care needs to be taken in high-risk age groups.

The temperature on May 29 was also higher than India's previous record temperature in the Phalodi Desert in Rajasthan, which recorded a temperature of 51 degrees Celsius in 2016.

As the hot weather exceeds human tolerance, New Delhi officials also warn of a risk of water shortage in the capital region.

People are being urged to conserve water and relief measures are being put in place where water is only available for 15 to 20 minutes a day, according to The Times of India .
