Pre-match review
Mamelodi Sundowns enter the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as a true force in Africa. The South African side have just concluded an impressive domestic season by winning their eighth consecutive South African Premier Soccer League title, finishing 12 points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates.
Not only stopping at the domestic stage, "Masandawana" also clearly showed its ambition to reach the regional level when for the first time in nearly a decade, they participated in the CAF Champions League final. Despite losing 2-3 to Egyptian representative Pyramids FC, Sundowns' performance still received much praise.
That spirit continued to be demonstrated in the opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup, when coach Miguel Cardoso and his team defeated Ulsan HD (South Korea) with a score of 1-0. The only goal by striker Iqraam Rayners just before half-time helped the team to their first victory in the history of participating in the tournament.
While for many European representatives, the FIFA Club World Cup can be seen as a burden after a long and stressful season, for teams from Asia and Africa, this is a special stage, a rare opportunity to assert their position and dream of significant financial rewards.
Just looking at the numbers says it all: the CAF Champions League title brings in under $5 million, while just participating and winning a match at the FIFA Club World Cup, Sundowns pocketed $11.55 million.
On the other hand, Dortmund did not get off to a good start when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Fluminense (Brazil) in slippery, wet conditions at MetLife. This was the second consecutive match where the quality of the pitch had been criticized, following the confrontation between Palmeiras and Porto the day before. Palmeiras youngster Estevao even publicly expressed his concerns about the issue.
It is worth mentioning that the draw result did not reflect the whole picture of the match, because Dortmund were completely outclassed by Fluminense's speed and technique. If it were not for the brilliance of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel - who continuously blocked dangerous shots from his opponents - the Bundesliga representative would have probably had to accept defeat.
Facing Sundowns in the second match, Dortmund had no choice but to win. With a deep squad and the motivation to regain confidence after a disappointing opening match, the yellow-black team was expected to show a different side: classier, more determined and clearer in their approach to the match.
Form, head-to-head history
The two teams have never met in the past.
In the last 5 matches, Mamelodi Sundowns won 3, drew 1 and lost 1. Meanwhile, Dortmund are unbeaten with 4 wins and 1 draw.
