“This visit is an honor for France, at a time when our country will host the Rugby World Cup,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement on August 24.

The presence of King Charles III in Paris “will demonstrate the depth of the historical ties that unite our two countries and our two peoples, and will contribute to the celebration of French excellence and know-how.”

Meanwhile, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace on the same day, “the visit will celebrate the shared history, culture and values of Britain and France.”

King Charles III has planned a three-day visit to France in late March, which if it goes ahead would be his first state visit since ascending the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

However, the visit was cancelled after social unrest over President Emmanuel Macron's new pension law erupted, turning into some of the worst street violence in years across the country.

Instead, King Charles III visited Germany on his first foreign trip as head of the British monarchy.

The late Queen Elizabeth II, a fluent French speaker, made five state visits to France during her reign, in addition to numerous private visits.

Her first visit to France took place in 1948, as the 22-year-old Princess Elizabeth.
