Professor Tang Jie is the “father” of the AMiner academic platform – a globally influential system that attracts tens of millions of visits from more than 220 countries and regions. He is also the leader of China’s large-scale AI projects such as the 130 billion parameter GLM-130B language model and the trillion-parameter “Wudao” super model, contributing to affirming China’s pioneering position in the AI era. He has been honored with many prestigious awards such as the State Science and Technology Progress Award, the ACM KDD Test-of-Time Award, the First Prize of the China Association for Artificial Intelligence, and has been recognized as an IEEE Fellow, ACM Fellow, and AAAI Fellow – noble titles that recognize globally influential scholars.
Professor Duong Kiet will assume the role of Honorary Director of the Institute for Applied Research of Artificial Intelligence in Sustainable Development at the High Technology and Innovation Park, Vietnam National University, Hanoi , at the invitation of Professor Le Quan, Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The accompaniment of Professor Duong Kiet with the scientific activities of Hanoi National University is a clear demonstration of the effective cooperation between Hanoi National University and Tsinghua University.
With his extensive international connections and reputation, the Professor will be an important bridge in expanding cooperation between VNU and Chinese and international research organizations and scientific institutes. Together with Tsinghua University, he will contribute to promoting joint research initiatives, especially in the field of sustainable artificial intelligence (AI). This cooperation will not only enrich research resources but also create opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, skills and technology between the two universities, while contributing to enhancing the position of VNU on the global AI research map.
With groundbreaking contributions in the field of AI, especially in research on data mining, machine learning and social networks, Professor Duong Kiet will play an important role in orienting the development strategy of this field at Hanoi National University. His participation is expected to help Hanoi National University develop a sustainable AI research and application system, serving strategic areas such as environmental protection, green economic development, healthcare and smart cities. He will accompany the Institute for Research on Artificial Intelligence Applications in Sustainable Development in building AI solutions that not only meet the needs of technological development but also ensure that these solutions have positive and long-term impacts on the community and the environment.
It is known that Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Tsinghua University established a relationship in 2006. In August 2024, the two universities signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in research, exchange of lecturers, researchers and students, coordination in organizing seminars, academic conferences, exchange of documents in education, research, publishing and academic information. On March 2, 2025, under the witness of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Secretary of the Party Committee, President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi Le Quan and Alternate Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Academician of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the Council of Tsinghua University Qiu Yong signed and exchanged a cooperation agreement on student exchange between the two universities.
On the occasion of the State visit to Vietnam by General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping from April 14-15, 2025, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Tsinghua University signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of the “Vietnam-China University Network” and the memorandum of understanding demonstrating their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the field of Digital Education, jointly addressing the opportunities and challenges brought about by AI and online education.
Previously, Vietnam National University, Hanoi coordinated with Tsinghua University, China to organize the International Conference “Vietnam-China Higher Education: Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century - The Digital Intelligence Era” on March 1, 2025. The conference created opportunities for connection, exchange and academic exchange between experts and researchers of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Tsinghua University and Vietnamese universities in the field of higher education in general and higher education with the support of AI; proposed many practical and feasible solutions to contribute to promoting development, enhancing cooperation in education, science, technology and innovation in general, cooperation between higher education institutions of Vietnam and China in particular in the digital intelligence era.
At the same time, VNU and Tsinghua University will utilize massive open online learning (MOOC) platforms to enhance exchanges between the two sides and promote interactions between lecturers and students through collaborative courses. Currently, Tsinghua University is supporting VNU in joining the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance, as well as supporting the expansion of the international education network.
The cooperation between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Tsinghua University has been effective and continuous over the past time, creating a solid foundation for the development of science, technology and education between the two universities in particular, contributing to creating a breakthrough for the country's socio-economic development in the era of development in general.
