Bringing Long An into music with all the love for the homeland
With the song Long An, his homeland, young singer Nguyen Tran Tien Toi (from Thu Thua district) touched the hearts of listeners with his simple melody, sincere lyrics and especially his deep love for the land where he was born and raised. Not fussy about harmony, not following the market, Tien Toi chose to tell about his homeland in the musical language of the West - both familiar and profound.
Poster of the song Long An, my homeland
Sharing the reason for composing the song, he confided: "What inspired me to write this song is my love for my hometown Long An. I want to preserve my childhood memories associated with this land through music. Due to the nature of my work, I often travel to many localities in the province, seeing my hometown with vast rice fields and I wrote the first verse of the song: "Follow me to Long An, I will take you to see the ripe rice season"".
As a son of the Western region, Tien Toi's music is imbued with the breath of folk music. He believes that folk music is the most natural voice to express the identity of the people and culture here. His hometown Long An is therefore not only a personal song but has become a part of the collective memory of many people, especially Long An audiences. Tien Toi shared: "I am very touched when I see people using my songs to insert into videos introducing the place Long An. That is the greatest gift for a young artist like me."
“On the other side of the Dong Vam Co River, on this side of the Tay Vam Co River. That is my hometown, Long An welcomes you”, the lyrics end the song like a gentle hug from Long An for anyone who visits. The two large river branches winding around that peaceful land are not only geographical marks but also symbols of the harmony and hospitality of the people here.
Although this is the first song written specifically about Long An, Tien Toi affirms that he will not stop there. The merger of Long An and Tay Ninh provinces into the (new) Tay Ninh province, Tien Toi considers this a new source of inspiration for his compositions, especially the image of the Dong Vam Co River (together with the Tay Vam Co River, the two main tributaries that form the Vam Co River) - the river associated with both lands, can be the main material in the following songs.
Spreading the image of homeland through music
Growing up between the Vam Co rivers, Nguyen Hoang Tien (known by many as “Tien Vam Co”) chose music as a way to bring Long An closer to everyone. “As a son of Long An, I always want to do something to make my hometown more known. Music is the “glue” that binds us together and I believe it is the most intimate way to introduce Long An to friends at home and abroad,” Tien shared.
In his compositions, the place Hung Dien is always mentioned by Mr. Tien. He said that the place has left many memories in him not only through the scenery but also through daily experiences. Mr. Tien used to live and work as a local here, and those close days became valuable materials to help him write simple, sincere, and rustic songs.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Tien is a photographer and has had a passion for music since he was a student.
He chose folk songs as the foundation, mixed with modern Rap to create a harmonious melody between tradition and modernity, both easy to listen to and still keeping the "soul" of the South in every word and melody. The song "Duong ve Long An" composed by himself is one of them, not only an artistic product, the song is also a "map" that takes listeners to the specialties, landmarks, cultural festivals,... of Long An.
In the song, the names of 15 districts, towns and cities are combined with typical features such as Go Den - Ben Luc rice wine, Duc Hoa peanuts, Lam Chay Festival and dragon fruit garden - Chau Thanh, Vam Nhut Tao - Tan Tru relic, Nang Thom Cho Dao rice with Don Ca Tai Tu - Can Duoc, Van Te Nghia Si Can Giuoc, Tan Lap Floating Village - Moc Hoa, Tan Thanh lotus field,... both familiar and proud.
"Since its release, "Duong ve Long An" has attracted attention and spread on social networking platforms, widely shared by audiences inside and outside the province. Many units have also contacted to ask to use the song in local cultural promotion programs. When Long An and Tay Ninh provinces are merged into Tay Ninh province (new), I have planned to compose a separate song for the new province. The song will also have typical landmarks that identify both provinces" - Mr. Tien confided.
With a heart full of love for their homeland and a spirit of constant creativity, the young people of Long An are writing a symphony full of pride for the land they were born in. Each song is not only music but also an emotional narrative about their familiar homeland./.
