Russian and Chinese foreign ministers meet

VnExpressVnExpress18/09/2023

Russian and Chinese foreign ministers met in Moscow to discuss a range of issues, including the US and Ukraine.

"The discussions took place in a trusting and constructive manner, typical of the Russia-China dialogue," the Russian Foreign Ministry said after a meeting between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Wang Yi on September 18.

The agency said Mr. Wang informed Mr. Lavrov about the content of the discussion with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan. The Chinese Foreign Ministry previously described the meeting between Mr. Wang and Mr. Sullivan as "frank, substantive and constructive."

"The parties discussed in detail the current situation in Ukraine, noting that efforts to resolve the crisis are futile without taking into account interests and especially without the participation of Russia," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The two sides highlighted the closeness of their positions regarding the actions of the United States in the international arena, including those of an anti-Russian and anti-Chinese nature," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In addition, Mr. Wang and Mr. Lavrov also discussed preparations for Russia to attend the third Belt and Road Forum, scheduled to take place in the Chinese capital Beijing in October, but it has not been confirmed whether President Vladimir Putin will attend the event.

Russian media reported that Mr. Wang is expected to meet with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev on September 19, before participating in trilateral talks with Mongolian officials.

Mr. Wang arrived in Moscow on September 18, starting a four-day visit to Russia, after meeting with the US security adviser in Malta. The White House said Mr. Wang and Mr. Sullivan discussed "US-China bilateral issues, regional and global security issues, the conflict in Ukraine, cross-strait issues, and other topics."

Russia and China are strategic allies and have often touted their open-ended strategic partnership, as well as economic and military cooperation. During his visit to Russia in March, Chinese President Xi Jinping said bilateral relations had entered a new era. President Putin said on September 12 that Russia-China relations had reached an unprecedented level.

Experts say Russia and China are drawing closer amid escalating tensions with the West. Some Western officials say the partnership with China is one of the factors that helps Russia cope with a series of sanctions against the country.
