After the flood, My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities was seriously damaged and can no longer be used.

The historic floods that occurred in the western communes of Nghe An have caused severe damage to more than 50 schools; many teaching equipment, desks, chairs, books, and supplies were completely damaged.

Teaching and learning at the cultural house

As soon as the floodwaters receded, despite his house being in disarray, teacher Tran Sy Ha, Principal of My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School, immediately rode his motorbike from his home in Huu Kiem commune to the school, about 75km away.

After driving a short distance, the road was cut off by a landslide, so Mr. Ha had to leave his bike behind and walk. After crossing mountains and forests, it took him nearly two days to reach the school. When he arrived, he saw the school flooded with mud up to the second floor, all of his belongings swept away, and he could not hold back his tears.

The water flooded the first floor more than 1 meter, all 12 televisions, 22 computers for teaching, 5 refrigerators, all desks and chairs of 7 classrooms; 1.7 tons of rice reserved for boarding students, books, personal belongings of students and even blankets, beds and wardrobes of boarding teachers were all swept away and damaged. The flood receded, leaving the school with a huge amount of mud in the campus with an area of 5,300m2 , height of more than 3m.

Teacher Tran Sy Ha burst into tears when he saw the school and classrooms destroyed.

“Before entering the summer vacation, the school organized to move assets, school supplies, books, etc. to the second floor but there were still damages,” teacher Tran Sy Ha sadly shared.

Teacher Tran Sy Ha said: In the 2025-2026 school year, My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School has 12 classes, a total of 188 students (including 1 main school and 4 satellite schools in the villages). Because the main school is seriously damaged, there is a high risk of landslides and it can collapse at any time, so the students are sent to satellite schools in the villages. Most of them are having to combine 2 to 3 levels/class.

In Xop Duong village alone, there are only 7 students, so it is impossible to open a class, so they are temporarily sent to the main school to study and arranged to stay with teachers at the community cultural house.

Up to now, 5 sets of teacher desks and chairs, 40 sets of student desks and chairs supported by individuals and groups have been transported to the school. Another unit has promised to sponsor 90 more sets of student desks and chairs, which will be transported to the school in 1 to 2 days. Thus, the basic desks and chairs are enough to serve teaching and learning.

The school also received 15 sets of computers, of which 4 sets have been delivered to the school. The Vietnam Education Publishing House and other benefactors donated all textbooks and notebooks to the school's students.

In addition to supplies and equipment, the school has also received about 1.1 billion VND in support to overcome the damage caused by the flood. Teacher Tran Sy Ha said: The opening ceremony of the new school year will be held together with My Ly Kindergarten, while teaching and learning will be carried out in cultural houses.

Hope the new school will be completed soon.

The principal of My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities also informed that the new school, which was supported by the Ministry of Public Security to be built next to the Xang Tren village cultural house, has completed more than 50% of the site clearance.

Previously, based on the survey results, on August 6, the Ministry of Public Security issued a 40-day and night peak plan to build houses and schools for ethnic minority people and students in the western communes of Nghe An province.

Senior Lieutenant General Pham The Tung, Deputy Minister of Public Security and Secretary of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Duc Trung presented gifts to encourage students of My Ly commune.

According to the plan, the Ministry of Public Security will coordinate with Nghe An province to build 500 houses for people in the western communes of Nghe An; at the same time, rebuild My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School and My Ly Commune Health Station with a total cost of 15 billion VND.

The guiding viewpoint of the Ministry of Public Security is to be as fast, decisive, as quickly and promptly as possible so that people can quickly have a place to live and students can have a spacious school to study before the new school year begins.

The 2025-2026 school year is set to be a very challenging one for both our teachers and students, and we will do our best.

Teacher Tran Sy Ha

"The 2025-2026 school year is determined to be very difficult for both teachers and students of the school, we will do our best. The school hopes to continue to receive the attention and support of agencies, units, and philanthropists to overcome difficulties and ensure teaching and learning. I hope the construction of the new school will soon be completed and put into use," said teacher Tran Sy Ha.

The historic floods that occurred at the end of July caused severe damage to more than 50 schools; many teaching equipment, desks, chairs, books, and supplies were completely destroyed. Many teachers' families also had their houses and belongings swept away.

Immediately after the flood, the Nghe An education sector launched a "school helping school" campaign to clean up, repair damage, and provide support for facilities and teaching equipment. The Nghe An education sector also mobilized more than 3 billion VND from various sources to support schools and families of staff and teachers who suffered heavy losses due to floods.

On August 7, the Standing Committee of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee also agreed on the plan to allocate 300 billion VND to support overcoming the consequences of natural disasters caused by storm No. 3, from the central budget; of which, 50 billion VND will be allocated to support the repair and construction of new school facilities and purchase of teaching equipment.

On September 3, speaking to reporters about this support amount, Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province, said that the unit has submitted documents to the Department of Finance and is waiting for the province to allocate funds.
