World Oceans Day (June 8) represents the efforts and connects everyone around the world to conserve and sustainably develop the seas and oceans.

The ocean sustains humanity and all life on Earth, but our understanding of the ocean is very limited compared to its vastness and immensity. The catastrophic impacts and consequences on the ocean are alarming in many parts of the world.

World Oceans Day (June 8) is an occasion to highlight the important role of the ocean in life on Earth, and to call for practical actions to protect and exploit marine resources sustainably. Faced with the challenges of climate change, plastic pollution and overexploitation, joining hands to preserve the ocean is to protect the future of the blue planet and future generations.

In 2025, the theme chosen by the United Nations is "Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us", a powerful inspirational message, arousing the responsibility to join hands to preserve the ocean, calling for coordinated activities between countries and organizations to protect marine ecosystems for all humanity in the context of the ocean facing serious challenges due to climate change and human impacts.

Responding to World Oceans Day, Vietnam Sea and Islands Week (June 1-8 every year) is an important occasion to promote the spirit of loving the sea, demonstrating the responsibility to preserve the environment and marine resources, and strongly affirming the determination to sustainably develop marine economic sectors associated with protecting environmental resources and national sovereignty at sea.

With the theme "Green technology for sustainable oceans", Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2025 emphasizes the pioneering role of science, innovation and green technologies in protecting the ocean and developing a prosperous marine economy .

Sharing with the press about the Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2025 recently, Mr. Vu Minh Ly, Deputy Director of the Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that the theme of the Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2025 conveys a message emphasizing the pioneering role of science, innovation and green technologies in protecting the ocean, developing a rich and powerful marine economy, preserving national sovereignty in the new era - the era of national growth, arousing community responsibility, promoting innovation and green transformation for a sustainable ocean.

"In response to World Oceans Day, Vietnam Sea and Islands Week is an important occasion to promote and spread the spirit of love for the sea, demonstrate the responsibility to preserve the environment and marine resources, and strongly affirm the determination to sustainably develop marine economic sectors associated with protecting environmental resources and national sovereignty at sea," Mr. Vu Minh Ly emphasized.

In recent years, Vietnam has achieved many important achievements in marine environmental management, demonstrated through a comprehensive policy system and close coordination between functional agencies. The Party and State have issued the Strategy for Sustainable Development of Vietnam's Marine Economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, aiming to control pollution, protect biodiversity and develop the marine economy in a green direction.

An activity to protect the marine environment launched by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

However, under the pressure of socio-economic development and many other causes, Vietnam's marine environment has to face a series of problems such as: Degradation of landscape, marine and coastal ecosystems; pollution of coastal marine environment; marine environmental incidents.

Therefore, Vietnam Sea and Islands Week and World Oceans Day 2025 this year are opportunities to affirm determination, change awareness, unify actions, proactively overcome difficulties and challenges, prevent the increase in the rate of pollution and environmental degradation, exploit and sustainably use marine and island resources, and ensure ecological balance.

The application of green technology is considered a key solution in solving marine environmental pollution. In the context of the marine economy being identified as one of the pillars of national development, the application of green technology, promoting innovation and enhancing international cooperation are inevitable directions to realize the vision of sustainable ocean.
