RT quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on August 4 as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after the two countries' delegations complete all necessary preparations.
At a regular press conference, Mr. Peskov reiterated Moscow's stance that a meeting between President Putin and Mr. Zelensky could only take place "after the necessary work at the expert level is completed and the two sides sufficiently narrow the gap."

Previously, President Zelensky stated that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine could only make real progress if he met directly with President Putin.
However, Russia believes that Mr Zelensky's legitimacy is now in question and that the meeting can only take place after the two sides broadly agree on a peace deal.
According to the Ukrainian Constitution, Mr Zelensky's presidential term ended last year and power should be transferred to the speaker of parliament .
Ukrainian law prohibits holding elections during martial law, allows for emergency extensions of the terms of parliamentarians, but does not apply to the president.
