According to records at the markets, many items are selling well such as vegetables, tubers, fruits, and processed foods in people's daily meals.
Ms. Tran Thi Nhung, a vegetable stall at Dong Da market (Hai Chau ward) said that the supply of green vegetables to the market is abundant, and purchasing power has increased because it is still the tourist season. Currently, the prices of spinach, water spinach, mustard greens, jute mallow, etc. are stable at 10-15 thousand VND/bunch, green squash, bitter melon, and squash are 20-40 thousand VND/kg (an increase of 2-5 thousand VND/kg depending on the time); spices that are difficult to grow in the dry season should increase by a few thousand VND/kg such as herbs, coriander, green banana, and mushrooms.
Meanwhile, many pork stalls in large and small markets in the city are sluggish due to the impact of African swine fever. People are limiting their purchases, so many small traders in this industry have had to temporarily close or switch to selling other types of meat such as beef, chicken, goat, etc.
Since July, due to strong consumer demand, seafood prices have increased by 5-15 thousand VND/kg, such as large mackerel 120 thousand VND/kg; whole tuna 120-150 thousand VND/kg (depending on type); large white pomfret 160 thousand VND/kg; live silver pomfret 280-300 thousand VND/kg; cuttlefish 250-300 thousand VND/kg (depending on size); medium tiger prawn 240-250 VND/kg, large prawn 300-320 thousand VND/kg, freshwater prawn 250-270 thousand VND/kg (depending on market)...
According to a survey, the prices of livestock and poultry meat such as chicken, duck, buffalo, and beef have also increased by 5-10 thousand VND/kg. At Hoa Khanh market (Lien Chieu ward), whole live chicken costs 140 thousand VND/kg; ready-made free-range chicken costs 130 thousand VND/kg, ready-made duck costs 120 thousand VND/kg; grade 1 beef costs 250 thousand VND/kg; prices of clams, scallops, oysters, crabs, and swimming crabs have increased by 10 thousand VND/kg compared to last month.
At supermarkets and agricultural stores, food products also attract consumers. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Uyen, an employee at WinMart supermarket on Nguyen Huu Tho street (Hoa Cuong ward), the supermarket is having a promotion program to reduce prices on green vegetables and fruits, so people are also buying a lot. Compared to other product groups, sales of food products have increased significantly; at the same time, the supermarket has not increased the selling price because it has worked with suppliers for many months.
In addition to popular cooling foods, fruits and soft drinks are also consumed strongly in the market.
Ms. Le Thi Thao, owner of a fruit business on Ton Duc Thang Street (near the Hue intersection overpass), said that since the beginning of August, the price of grade 1 and 2 oranges has increased by 3-4 thousand VND/kg; coconuts have increased by 2-3 thousand VND; watermelons have increased by 3 thousand VND/kg; some other fruits such as durian, avocado, rambutan have also increased by about 5 thousand VND; sugarcane has increased by 1,500 VND/kg.
“The reason for the price increase is because many types are at the end of the season, so the goods are not as diverse as before. However, because of the hot weather, people buy a lot to nourish their bodies,” Ms. Thao explained.
