(Dan Tri) - Mexico has received nearly 11,000 migrants deported from the United States since January 20, when US President Donald Trump took office, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on February 7.

President Sheinbaum said the figure includes about 2,500 people who are not Mexican citizens.

Earlier this week, Sheinbaum reached a deal with Trump to suspend tariffs on Mexican goods. In exchange, Mexico will deploy thousands of National Guard troops to the northern border with the United States to further reduce the flow of migrants to the United States.

Speaking at a regular morning press conference, Sheinbaum said Mexico has also repatriated migrants who were deported to Honduras via flights as well as land transport.

However, she stressed that the repatriation did not take place under duress.

“It is voluntary… We will support them to return to their homeland,” she told reporters.

President Trump on February 1 ordered a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods from China starting February 4 to address the national emergency of fentanyl and illegal immigrants entering the United States.

On February 3, Mr. Trump announced that he would suspend tariffs on Mexican imports for a month after a "very friendly" conversation with his Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum.
