According to sources, although no final decision has been made, under a proposed deal being discussed, up to eight Patriot missile defense systems in Israel could be transferred to the US and then sent to Ukraine.
A senior White House official said the Biden administration is holding discussions with Israel and Ukraine about the plan, with the US leader emphasizing the urgent need to provide Kiev with air defense systems against Moscow. The source said the plan will be realized.
If approved, the Israeli systems would first be sent to the US for upgrades before being shipped to Kiev. If the deal goes through, it would mark a shift in Israel’s stance, which has so far avoided taking public action against Russia.
The move comes after Israel announced in April that it would begin decommissioning eight Patriot batteries that have been in service for more than 30 years and replace them with more advanced systems.
The US and Germany have sent Patriot batteries to Ukraine, but Washington has made it clear that Kiev needs to replenish them.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once asked Israel to provide Kiev with the Iron Dome missile defense system, but Tel Aviv declared that it was only ready to help Kiev develop the air defense system and emphasized "not providing Iron Dome".
