According to the Center for Internet Security (CIS), more than 90 state and local government agencies in the US have become targets of cyber attacks, when security vulnerabilities were discovered in Microsoft SharePoint server software.
Randy Rose, vice president of security operations at CIS, said there was no evidence that the attacks resulted in a serious security breach. The nonprofit also declined to identify the agencies targeted.
This month, a wave of cyberattacks targeting servers running versions of Microsoft SharePoint has caused widespread concern. At least 400 organizations have been affected, including several U.S. federal government agencies, according to Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm Eye Security. The list of victims continues to grow by the day.
Among them, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), one of 17 national laboratories under the US Department of Energy, confirmed that hackers had attempted to penetrate it. However, the incident was quickly detected and controlled, and fortunately no sensitive or confidential data was accessed.
The US Department of Energy also previously confirmed that only a “very small number” of their systems were affected in the incident related to the SharePoint vulnerability./.
