The US government has just announced a ban on new oil and gas drilling in many areas of Alaska in order to protect nearly 4.3 million hectares of Alaska's North Slope, which is home to many spectacular natural landscapes, iconic animal species and areas of importance to indigenous communities.

The National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska is an important ecological area for polar bears, caribou and hundreds of thousands of migratory birds.

According to the Washington Post, this conservation effort covers nearly half of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), which provides habitat for a variety of Arctic wildlife, such as polar bears, caribou and hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds.

The US Department of the Interior also announced the cancellation of leases for seven oil and gas exploration sites remaining under the administration of President Donald Trump.

However, Alaska Oil and Gas Association President Kara Moriarty said the decision would make the US more dependent on foreign oil, which could produce more planet-warming emissions than oil extracted in Alaska.
