Tesla has officially launched the new Model YL 2025 electric car in China, a market where the American electric car company is facing fierce competition from two "extremely strong" rivals in the country of a billion people, BYD and Xiaomi. This is a wheelbase extension version of the Model Y, increasing the length by 150 mm and the height by 44 mm, allowing for 3 rows of seats in a 2+2+2 configuration. The starting price is 47,120 USD (about more than 1 billion VND), expected delivery from September 2025.
According to CEO Elon Musk, this model may never be sold in the US because the rapid development of self-driving cars has reduced the demand for traditional 6-seat SUVs. In the US, Tesla is currently focusing on robotaxi and Cybercab services. The Tesla Model YL uses a full-time 4-wheel drive system, is equipped with continuously variable shock absorbers and is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The operating range according to CLTC standards is 751 km thanks to a large capacity battery. The interior of the 2025 Tesla Model YL features a second row of two individual seats with heating, ventilation, and power armrests, while the third row is added but has many limitations. Despite the extra legroom and flexibility provided by the sliding middle row, the third row is still considered a “small bench” and is only suitable for short-term use.
Limited headroom can be inconvenient for passengers taller than 1.7 m. When using all 3 rows of seats, the luggage compartment can only hold about 3 backpacks, even though Tesla has added a 116-liter front trunk and an underfloor storage compartment. A Chinese auto media channel - EV Insights, after experiencing it in real life, concluded that the third row of seats of the Model YL did not meet expectations. According to many people who have experienced this car model, the reason the third row of seats of the Model YL has not met expectations is because Tesla has kept the SUV coupe design, helping the car still have a distinctive design but at the expense of comfort and practicality. With the Model YL, Tesla is targeting families in China, where three-row SUVs are increasingly popular. However, the limited rear-seat space could be a major drawback compared to domestic rivals that focus heavily on spaciousness and utility.
Currently, when the Tesla Model YL is released in the Chinese market this September, it will have to compete with formidable names such as Li Auto L8, Onvo L90 and Aito M8, which are also preparing to launch. Video : Video: See details of the new Tesla Model YL 2025 electric car.
