Engage with "difficult, painful" topics
Journalist Nguyen Ly, Head of VNA's permanent office in Quang Tri, was honored to win the C prize of the 19th National Press Award - 2024 with a series of investigative articles - 5-part electronic newspaper: "Large-scale illegal excavation of soil to level the Linh Truong resettlement area", carried out in Ben Ha village, Linh Truong commune, Gio Linh district, for about 2 months (from the end of January 2024 to March 2024).

He said he made the work in the last days of January 2024, which was also the days before the Lunar New Year, and then continued to pursue the case to the end. “In the past, I discovered and exposed many cases of illegal sand mining and soil extraction, destroying land, losing mineral resources, and causing resentment among the people.
In particular, the case of "Large-scale illegal excavation of soil to level the Linh Truong Resettlement Area" is the largest case ever in Quang Tri, with more than 23,000 m3 of soil illegally taken away. The subjects committed the violation openly in broad daylight, bringing excavators and large trucks to the scene," said Mr. Ly.
According to Mr. Ly, the implementation of the above work encountered many difficulties because the subjects tried to avoid it; limited documents, difficult to obtain officially; the group of subjects performed public acts, making the process of accessing the truth difficult; pressure to verify and verify information...
“Fortunately, during my work, I received the support, encouragement and motivation of a number of colleagues; the cooperation and facilitation of localities, professional agencies and leaders of Gio Linh district. All for the common goal of clarifying the nature of the case and the violators to handle them according to the provisions of the law, not letting the State’s resources be wasted.
Law enforcement agencies have also promptly intervened to handle the subjects related to the incident. In January 2025, the Investigation Police Agency, Quang Tri Provincial Police issued decisions to prosecute 4 subjects related to the incident, for "violating regulations on resource exploitation", Mr. Ly said.
According to him, the most satisfying thing when doing the above work is to detect the problem early and pursue the case to the end. Because early detection not only ensures timeliness and competition in the press, but also helps the authorities detect and handle the case promptly, prevent violations of the law, limit damage and serve as a warning. Pursuing the problem to the end also affirms the expertise and courage of the journalist who does not give up halfway for any reason when detecting a case, especially for an issue of public concern.
Meanwhile, journalist Lam Thi Hoai Thanh (Lam Thanh) proudly announced that she and her group of authors won the C prize of the 19th National Press Award - 2024 with a meaningful series of articles titled " Peaceful Wishes from the Sacred Land of Quang Tri". This is a series of articles that she and her colleagues have cherished to do on the occasion of an event held for the first time in Vietnam in Quang Tri: Festival for Peace.
“In anticipation of this particularly important political event, in the first months of 2024, we spent a lot of time and effort going to many places to meet historical witnesses still living in Quang Tri province to record vivid stories in the temporarily occupied area of Quang Tri after the Paris Agreement was signed; connections of affection to create a story that spreads the value of peace not only in Vietnam but also to lands still immersed in bombs and bullets of war in the world.
From information, documents and living witnesses of history, we have written the above meaningful series of articles. These are stories that create the value of peace and the wish for peace from the sacred land of Quang Tri", Ms. Thanh shared.
To complete the series, she and her colleagues went to many localities to meet with typical historical witnesses such as: Mr. Nguyen Duc Toan (72 years old), former Firepower Platoon Leader of Trieu Phuoc Commune Team, Trieu Phong District - a witness to the incident of shooting down an American plane in Cao Hy village field, Trieu Phuoc Commune - just a few hours before the Paris Agreement officially took effect; Ms. Truong Thi Chien (69 years old), a guerrilla in Trieu Trach Commune, Trieu Phong District, who participated in the military campaign at Long Quang checkpoint to persuade and mobilize soldiers on the other side of the front line to lay down their guns and return to the revolution.
Or it takes a lot of time and effort to find ways to connect and contact some American veterans such as Mr. Chuck Searcy (76 years old) - President of the Vietnam branch of the Veterans for Peace; Mr. Kem Hunter (79 years old)... They are people who fought in Vietnam and when peace returned to Vietnam to use their meaningful work to heal the wounds of war left by the US army in Quang Tri in particular and Vietnam in general.
A foothold for the new journey
According to journalist Nguyen Ly: “The National Press Award is the most prestigious award for journalists in Vietnam. Winning this award is not only a personal honor, but also has many social meanings, contributing to "promoting" the brand of the main press agency where I work, VNA, and the resident press in Quang Tri. The award is not simply a title but an affirmation that what the journalist writes is correct, accurate, has practical value and brings positive changes.”

Ms. Thanh happily shared: “I feel very honored and proud to have done this special thing with my colleagues. The award is not only a personal joy, but also a great encouragement for the persistent and serious work process that we journalists always pursue. This is also the motivation for us to continue to dedicate ourselves to writing works of social value.”
Ms. Thanh said that recently she was fortunate to work with a group of colleagues who always had a serious working spirit, shared to support each other to create quality press works, and won a number of central and local press awards.
Permanent Vice President of the Quang Tri Provincial Journalists Association Hoang Ngoc Sy informed that since its establishment in 2005, the Quang Tri Provincial Press Award has achieved very proud results, contributing to promoting the development of the provincial press in particular and the Vietnamese revolutionary press in general.
From the Quang Tri Provincial Press Awards, the Provincial Journalists Association selected outstanding works to compete in the National Press Awards and achieved remarkable results. The Quang Tri Journalists Association became one of the local Journalists Associations that won the most national and specialized press awards in the country.
At the 3rd Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association in 1962, Uncle Ho advised: "To fulfill their glorious duty, press cadres need to cultivate revolutionary ethics, strive to improve their ideology, expertise and culture, focus on political study to grasp the Party and Government's guidelines and policies, go deep into reality, go deep into the working masses".
“Following Uncle Ho’s words, each member of the provincial journalist association needs to continue to strive to produce more quality journalistic works. Regarding the provincial press awards, we need to continue to maintain them to be worthy of the stature and contributions of the press to the revolutionary cause of the Party,” Mr. Sy advised.
