Heavy rain causes heavy damage in Chongqing, President Xi Jinping issues instructions

The death toll and number of missing people due to heavy rain in Chongqing were released by local authorities, according to China Daily today, July 5.

The Wanzhou Emergency Management Office reported that as of 10 a.m. on July 5, heavy rains had caused disasters in 36 towns, villages, and streets. The affected population was 37,226, of whom 11,578 had been urgently evacuated and 779 had been resettled.

The heavy rains caused 50 houses to collapse and 112 houses to be damaged, and thousands of hectares of crops were damaged. The direct economic loss in the area was nearly 228 million yuan ($31.5 million), according to China Daily .

Local authorities have launched rescue operations immediately after the disaster and will continue to strengthen emergency and disaster response to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has also asked governments at all levels to prioritize ensuring the safety of people and property, and called on China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and emergency management and water resources ministries to improve their coordination and warning, according to Xinhua.

China's Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Emergency Management have announced 320 million yuan in emergency funds to support disaster relief, including Chongqing.

In addition, China's Ministry of Water Resources has issued emergency flood response measures for Inner Mongolia and the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang, according to CCTV. Heavy rain is expected in these areas today, Reuters reported, citing Chinese media.
