A 'milestone' in India-Austria relations

Narendra Modi will visit Austria from July 9-10, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central European country in 41 years.

Sharing on social network X on July 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the honor of visiting Austria for the first time next week, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (November 10, 1949 - November 10, 2024).

Expressing his gratitude to his Austrian counterpart Karl Nehammer, Mr. Modi expressed “looking forward to our discussions on strengthening relations between the two countries and exploring new avenues of cooperation.”

The Indian leader's "feelings" were in response to a post by Chancellor Karl Nehammer on X network a day earlier. He looked forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi in the capital Vienna and affirmed that the first visit to Austria by the head of the Indian government was an "important milestone", an opportunity to discuss deepening bilateral relations and closer cooperation on "many geopolitical challenges".

Modi will meet President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Chancellor Karl Nehammer, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said. The two prime ministers will also address Indian and Austrian business leaders.

Austria is the second destination of Prime Minister Modi's three-day visit (September 7-10). Before that, Prime Minister Modi went to Moscow to attend the 22nd Russia-India Summit.

This is Prime Minister Modi's first visit to Russia in nearly five years. He last visited the country in 2019 when he attended an important economic forum in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.
