Pomelo on the market |
Quality is invested
Thuy Bieu pomelo was recognized as one of the 50 famous fruit specialties of Vietnam in 2008. Since then, the quality and area of Thuy Bieu pomelo have received investment from standardizing the growing process according to VietGAP, tracing the origin to certifying geographical boundaries.
Mr. Dang Xang on Than Van Nhiep Street, Thuy Xuan Ward shared that his family is growing more than 100 pomelo trees, the oldest of which is over 30 years old. In recent years, his family has switched to farming according to VietGAP, so the quality of pomelos is quite high. Accordingly, the selling price of VietGAP pomelos is also higher than that of conventional farming, at times pomelos are sold for 40 - 45 thousand VND/kg, and are very popular with customers from the suburbs.
Building growing areas according to VietGAP standards not only improves product quality but also creates an important foundation for bringing Thuy Bieu pomelos into the large distribution system, stabilizing the market and increasing people's income.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong, Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, informed that the whole city has about 860 hectares of pomelo, of which the Thuy Bieu area (old) has 140 hectares. Currently, the city has supported the development of 8.7 hectares of pomelo according to VietGAP and has been certified. This is an important foundation in building the pomelo brand. Along with building and maintaining the VietGAP planting model, households are also applying sustainable production processes, increasing the use of organic fertilizers and using biological products to prevent and control pests. People are also familiar with recording product information, thereby easily tracing the origin of pomelo.
In addition, in early 2025, with the support of the Department of Science and Technology, the Thanh Tra product was also granted a Certificate of Geographical Indication of Hue. From there, the Thuy Bieu Thanh Tra brand was further identified.
Platform to bring products to supermarkets
The quality and reputation of the pomelo brand are already there, but the market for this specialty is still a difficult problem for the people as well as the cooperative.
Ms. Le Thi Lan Dung, Director of Thuy Bieu Cooperative, shared that Thuy Bieu pomelo products are mainly consumed seasonally, depending heavily on traders and traditional markets, and have not yet created a stable and long-term distribution channel. The lack of chain linkage makes it difficult for pomelos to compete with other fruits on the market. Therefore, gradually bringing pomelos into the supermarket system is considered an inevitable direction to expand the market, increase value and affirm the brand of this local specialty.
This problem was basically solved when recently more than 1 ton of Thuy Bieu pomelos meeting VietGAP standards and with traceable origin were brought into the Kingfoodmart Supermarket chain in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mr. Dang Huu Hai - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuy Xuan Ward, hopes that bringing Thuy Bieu pomelo products into the supermarket system will be the first step to lay the foundation for pomelos to step out of the traditional market, approaching the standard of modern goods. Participating in the supermarket system with a wide distribution network will help the product easily reach customers in many localities, even opening up export directions, creating opportunities to increase income for people.
However, to do this, the product must meet standards of quality, food hygiene and safety, packaging, labeling, etc. Therefore, the ward will increase support activities, supervision, and direction for Thuy Bieu Cooperative to closely work with people to maintain and expand the area of VietGAP pomelos. At the same time, we hope to receive the coordination and support of relevant departments and branches in supporting people to improve quality, expand the growing area meeting VietGAP standards, and promote the pomelo market in a sustainable manner.
