Mexico arrests senior members of Sinaloa 'terrorist' cartel

(CLO) Mexican authorities arrested two senior members of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel this week, just days before the US designated the group and other criminal organizations in Mexico as "terrorist organizations".

The list includes transnational gangs such as MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, along with others such as Sinaloa, Jalisco, Zetas, Gulf, Cartel Unidos and La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM).

Jose Angel Canobbio Inzunza was arrested in the northwestern Mexican city of Culiacán on Wednesday, according to information from Mexico's Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Omar Hamid García Harfuch.

According to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Canobbio Inzunza is believed to be the right-hand man of one of the sons of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, also known by the nickname "El Chapo".

Inzunza was indicted by a grand jury in Chicago in November 2024 for allegedly manufacturing cocaine, fentanyl and other drugs and importing them into the United States.

He reportedly teamed up with “El Chapo’s” son Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazaar and his three brothers, who are known as “Los Chapitos” within the Sinaloa Cartel.

On Thursday, Mexico also arrested Kevin Alonso “N” in Sinaloa, according to information from Minister Harfuch.

“In a coordinated operation, the Mexican Army, National Guard and Air Force arrested Kevin Alonso ‘N’, nicknamed ‘200’, in Culiacán, Sinaloa,” Harfuch told X.

“Arrests and operations will continue with the goal of reducing the violence in Sinaloa caused by criminal groups,” added Minister Harfuch.

The Sinaloa Cartel, once run by notorious drug lord “El Chapo,” remains one of the world’s most powerful criminal organizations, controlling much of the drug trade from Mexico into the United States.

The US designation of Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations could lead to tougher sanctions, including asset freezes and restrictions on financial transactions.
