Bringing "mountains of food" to travel: Family bonding or causing trouble for the tourism industry?

(Dan Tri) - Many people agree and support preparing food and groceries at home when traveling to save money, but some people think it reduces the experience and affects the tourism industry.

During the summer or long holidays, many families often choose to travel to rest, relax and increase the connection between members. In addition to suitcases of clothes, many people also bring food, spices, ready-to-eat foods... as if they were "moving the whole kitchen" to the resort.

Recently, the experience of a large family bringing a lot of fresh seafood from Hanoi to Sam Son for tourism quickly attracted the attention of the online community.

According to the poster, the extended family of 23 members, from the elderly to children, rented a villa for a 4-day vacation.

Even though they were going to the beach, the family still prepared a huge amount of food including 15kg of crabs bought from Quang Ninh , fresh oysters, shrimp, snails... Along with that were 100 chicken eggs, duck eggs, pre-processed green vegetables, rice rolls, spices... all carefully preserved in styrofoam boxes.

After the article was published, many Dan Tri readers gave their own opinions on this issue.

Some people believe that preparing food in advance when traveling is a reasonable choice because it saves money, ensures hygiene, suits the taste and avoids being "ripped off". In particular, cooking and eating together not only helps connect members but also creates a cozy, close atmosphere.

Reader Thuy Nguyen shared: “I completely agree with this family. There is nothing more fun than being able to gather together to cook and enjoy familiar dishes on vacation. It is also easier for children and the elderly to eat.”

Ngoc Minh also shares the same opinion: “Bringing food to go does not mean being stingy. For large families with diverse tastes, preparing food at home is a reasonable and economical way to ensure quality.”

Sharing the same opinion, Nguyen Nga said that renting a villa for vacation means that families can comfortably live in their own way.

“If they want, they can still buy more food on the spot. But during the rainy season, having food ready to bring along allows the whole family to cook together and gather together, making them even more connected,” she said.

This reader also shared his personal experience of being "ripped off" when buying seafood in Sam Son.

In early July, when taking her mother on a company trip, she easily discovered that a vendor at the seafood market was weighing the goods incorrectly.

“My mother often goes to the market so it was easy to recognize. When she spoke up, the seller adjusted the scale. The shrimps bought there were smaller than the ones I sell in the suburbs of Hanoi, but the price was higher.

For example, in Hanoi, large shrimps usually cost 230,000-240,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, small shrimps in Sam Son are offered by traders for 250,000 VND/kg. Even experienced people like my mother buy the wrong ones, let alone tourists,” Ms. Nga said indignantly.

Although affirming that Sam Son is still a popular destination every summer, the guest said that there are still many shortcomings here and affirmed that he only shared the reality, not intending to criticize or hate.

Besides the supportive opinions, many people oppose bringing too much food when traveling, arguing that this takes away the value of rest and relaxation of the trip.

Mr. Tran Van Sy frankly shared: “If you are going on a trip and still have to calculate so meticulously, it is better to stay home. If everyone does that, how will local restaurants survive?”

HoanLe also agreed: “Spending while traveling is a way to contribute to promoting the local economy. If we don’t consume or use services, how can the tourism industry develop?”

However, there are also many moderate opinions, saying that whether or not to bring food is a personal choice, as long as it suits the circumstances and needs of each family.

HungThanh commented: “There is no absolute right or wrong in this matter. The important thing is that everyone feels happy, comfortable and connected to each other.”

Mr. Henry Nguyen also expressed his opinion: “I really like the scene of the whole family traveling together, cooking and chatting. The brothers can sip, the sisters can chat, the grandparents can rest, and the children can run and play. It is like a team building session, increasing the bond between the members.”

He believes that the atmosphere during home-cooked meals at the villa is often warmer, more intimate and more profound than when eating out.

According to him, when at home, people can comfortably sip. But eating at a restaurant, time is limited, especially for grandparents and children who need to rest early. Of course, that does not mean that restaurants should be avoided during the holidays. The important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and pleasant.

In fact, this is not the first time the story of “bringing food when traveling” has caused controversy.

In February, a video sharing the moment of a large family in Ben Tre going on a spring outing attracted the attention of the online community when they brought along 40kg of Chinese sausage, 150 loaves of bread, 4kg of vermicelli, and dozens of pre-processed chickens and ducks. When stopping for lunch, the group spread out a tarp, set up a stove to cook and eat on the spot.

Due to the large amount of food, the group of 45 people had to rent a large car with a very large trunk to accommodate it. However, the video received mostly negative comments because they thought that traveling with only rice balls was a torture.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Ms. Doan Thu Trang, representative of a travel agency specializing in providing free & easy tours (a form of tourism in which customers freely arrange their own trips, only buying basic services such as air tickets, hotels or additional airport shuttles instead of buying a package tour) said that with groups of dozens of people from the same extended family, when traveling independently, they often have the habit of bringing a lot of food to stock up.

Especially if there are many elderly people in the group, the general mentality of the guests will be to save money by proactively eating, traveling, and staying.

According to Ms. Trang, many customers who compare the cost of food at their destination to where they live will immediately think they are being ripped off, so they want to be proactive in everything. However, customers should note that some fresh foods, especially seafood, are often difficult to preserve when traveling.

If not properly preserved, especially in hot weather conditions, food can easily spoil, leak or deteriorate, directly affecting health. In addition, if you do not have experience calculating the quantity, visitors can bring too much food, leading to waste and not using it all.
