In 2019, the project "Building a cooperative model linking organic rice production according to the value chain" was implemented by Que Lam Organic Agriculture Company Limited and Son La Provincial Agricultural Extension Center on a scale of 120 hectares in Quang Huy commune. The project supported 70% of the cost of fertilizers, biological pesticides, organized technical training and supported the establishment of Quang Huy Agricultural Service Cooperative.
Ms. Cam Thi Ngan, Director of Quang Huy Agricultural Service Cooperative, shared: Initially, when switching to an organic rice production model, the Cooperative encountered many difficulties because farmers were still hesitant and productivity decreased in the first few crops because the land needed time to be renovated. The Cooperative has persistently promoted and mobilized, from 160 initial members, with 30 hectares, to date, it has grown to 1,000 members, 130 hectares of rice varieties J02, Dai Thom 8 and BC 15. This year, the expected yield is 7 tons/ha. Phu Yen organic rice of the Cooperative has been certified organic, a 4-star OCOP product at the provincial level, the product is invested in packaging, has labels, and is consumed nationwide at a selling price of 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, 20-30% higher than regular rice.
In Giang village, Sap Xa commune, in 2021, only more than 20 households participated, but now 85 households voluntarily produce organically. Mr. Dinh Van Dung, Party cell secretary and head of Giang village, said: After each crop, people see that organic rice is delicious, sells for a good price, and the yield is higher than the old method. We do not have to worry about consumption, traders come to the village to buy.
Phu Yen is the largest rice growing area in the province with over 2,200 hectares, of which the key rice growing area in Muong Tac field is over 1,600 hectares. The district has promoted the sustainable development of organic rice. Since 2019, it has combined state support projects and mobilized diverse capital sources, from the budget to national target programs, to invest and replicate the model throughout the district.
Ms. Cam Thi Xieng, Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: The entire district has expanded the area of organic rice cultivation to more than 720 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Quang Huy, Gia Phu, Huy Bac and Muong Bang. Of which, 130 hectares of rice have been certified organic according to national standards.
Organic rice production not only improves soil quality and the environment, but also brings about clear economic efficiency. The average rice yield is 7 tons/ha, 1.5-2 tons/ha higher than traditional farming methods. The selling price of organic rice ranges from 25,000-30,000 VND/kg. Farmers increase their profits by about 8-12 million VND/ha, reducing input costs by 10-15%. Many cooperatives have applied digital technology to production such as using electronic diaries: Farmdiary, egap; QR code to trace the origin of products, sensors to monitor field conditions.
The Phu Yen organic rice model has great potential for replication, gradually creating value chain linkages, making Phu Yen a typical example of clean agricultural production, contributing significantly to the province's goal of developing green agriculture.
