On September 13, Ms. Luong Trinh Truc Kieu - principal of Phuoc Tan 1 Secondary School - said that she had given 1,300 out of the school's total of more than 2,700 students a day off.

Specifically, 1,300 students in grades 7 and 9 were absent from school to clean up the schoolyard, hallways, and ground floor classrooms... after floodwaters flooded in.

Previously, due to prolonged heavy rain, water from the upper Buong River flooded hundreds of households in Phuoc Tan ward.

Floodwaters also flooded Phuoc Tan 1 Secondary School, causing all classrooms and functional rooms on the ground floor, hallways, canteens, and schoolyard to be deeply flooded, with some places being flooded up to a meter deep.

According to Tuoi Tre Online, part of the school yard was still flooded by morning. Although the water had receded, the classrooms were still covered in mud and trash.

In the morning, all teachers and staff of the school were mobilized to go to school to pump water to wash the school yard, clean and sweep mud in the school's classrooms. As the water receded, teachers cleaned up so that students could go to class in the afternoon.

According to Ms. Kieu, depending on the actual situation, if the water recedes in time for cleaning, the 6th and 8th graders will be allowed to go to school as usual, otherwise they will be allowed to stay home. The school will organize additional classes for the students later.

Talking about the flooding situation at the school, Principal Luong Trinh Truc Kieu said: "Every year when there is heavy rain, flood water flows into the Buong River or overflows into the school, affecting teaching and learning. The school hopes that all levels will pay attention to solving the situation of water overflowing into the school every rainy season. That is also the wish of teachers and parents living in the area."
