After winning the Premier League, Liverpool shocked the world by spending £116 million to recruit midfielder Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen. Liverpool are said to have paid Leverkusen £100 million outright. The £16 million was paid based on the German player's performance.

Florian Wirtz has become the player with the highest transfer fee in the history of the Premier League. The previous record belonged to Enzo Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107 million.
Speaking on his Liverpool debut, the player born in 2003 said: “I want to win every title in every season. First of all, my teammates and I have to work hard every day. Finally, the most important thing is the success of the whole team. Last season, Liverpool won the Premier League.
My goal is to help the team defend the English football championship and go deep in the Champions League. I am a very ambitious person.
I am really excited to embark on a new journey. A big part of my decision was to experience something completely different by leaving the Bundesliga and coming to the Premier League.
I have seen a lot of support on social media. Thank you for everything. I am looking forward to getting out there and doing great things for Liverpool. And I am sorry for keeping everyone waiting so long.”

In coach Arne Slot’s tactical scheme, Wirtz will play as an attacking midfielder. In matches where Liverpool control the game, the German player will be allowed to move freely, playing the role of a true “number 10”.
Previously, coach Arne Slot successfully recruited Jeremie Frimpong, Wirtz's teammate at Leverkusen, for £29.5 million. Both were pillars in helping Leverkusen win the domestic double unbeaten in the 2023/24 season under the leadership of coach Xabi Alonso.
Frimpong is expected to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at full-back, after Liverpool sold the England star to Real Madrid for £10m, just a month before the player's contract expired.
Liverpool are also closing in on the £40m signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and have also signed goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for £29m as a back-up to Alisson Becker. The club's second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher has joined Brentford for £18m.
Despite their big spending, Liverpool are not done with the transfer market. The Merseyside club are said to be continuing their search for a new striker and centre-back, while also planning to balance the books by offloading some players who are no longer in Slot's plans.
